An ESP32 can use changes in Wi-Fi Channel State Information (CSI) to infer movement in a room, then pass a motion event to a home-automation system. In the project behind this title, those detections control smart devices; the specific board, software, and device integration were not identified, so they should not be assumed to match every setup.
How Wi-Fi becomes a motion signal
Wi-Fi packets travel through a room and reach an ESP32 receiver. Objects and people affect the wireless channel, so movement can change the characteristics of the received signal. The ESP32 can collect CSI from packets, and software can analyze a stream of those measurements for patterns associated with motion.
Espressif describes the distinction this way: “RSSI simply measures the strength of the signal, while CSI provides more detailed and richer channel information, including the amplitude and phase of the signal.” Espressif Systems’ ESP-CSI solution overview also discusses channel characteristics such as signal delay.
This is inference from changes in radio-channel measurements, not a camera-like image of a person. The output is a motion or presence estimate produced by software—not a visual record of who moved.

How the detection can control smart devices
The project’s basic chain is: Wi-Fi packets cross the room, an ESP32 captures CSI, software looks for movement-related changes, and a detection is sent to an automation layer that controls a device. Espressif’s examples cover the packet-sending, CSI-receiving, and sensing portions of that chain. Connecting a detection to a lamp, switch, or other smart device requires an additional integration.
The project description says the detections control smart devices, but it does not identify the automation platform, protocol, devices, or integration code. Those details matter: CSI sensing does not by itself make a device compatible with every smart-home system.

Choosing a CSI implementation path
Espressif’s ESP-CSI repository provides several starting points, including sender and receiver examples, a router-as-sender example, and a Wi-Fi sensing demo for motion and human-presence detection. Choose according to the signal source and the result you want; the examples are implementation options, not proof of this project’s exact setup.
| Approach | What it involves | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated sender and receiver | One device sends Wi-Fi packets and a separate ESP32 receives them and collects CSI. | Confirm the example’s chip and firmware compatibility. This requires a separate packet source as well as the receiver. |
| Router as packet source | A router supplies packets for an ESP32 receiver to observe; Espressif includes a router-as-sender example. | Check whether the router can provide the needed packet traffic and whether the example fits the router and receiver configuration. |
| Basic CSI capture | Collect CSI data from received packets, then build or adapt software to identify motion-related changes. | Plan for signal interpretation and configuration suited to the room and intended event. |
| Wi-Fi sensing component or demo | Use Espressif’s higher-level sensing example or component as a starting point for motion or presence workflows. | Check the documented chip and firmware compatibility and whether its output matches the event your automation needs. |
Espressif’s solution overview also describes an advanced multi-antenna demonstration in which an ESP32-C3 sends packets and an ESP32-S3 receives CSI, with clock synchronization supporting use of phase information. That pairing illustrates one approach; it is not a requirement for every CSI project.

What hardware and software should you check?
The appropriate product category is an ESP32 development board that is compatible with the CSI firmware and example you plan to use. The project description does not specify the ESP32 variant, board revision, or firmware, so there is no basis for naming one exact board as the required choice. Check the selected example’s requirements before buying or flashing hardware.
- Board and chip: Match the specific ESP32 variant to the example or component. The ESP-CSI repository is the practical starting point for available examples.
- Firmware and setup: Follow the project’s documented configuration and build instructions. Espressif’s ESP-CSI Programming Guide and ESP-IDF v5.1 Wi-Fi Driver Guide cover the relevant CSI and Wi-Fi software context.
- Flashing and diagnostics: A USB data cable may be needed to flash firmware or view serial output, but the connector depends on the board. It is not a confirmed part of the described project’s bill of materials.
- Automation connection: Identify how your sensing code will expose a motion event and how your automation system will receive it before choosing smart devices.
What CSI sensing does—and does not—establish
CSI provides richer channel measurements than a single signal-strength reading, but interpreting them still depends on software and the radio environment. Motion sensing is an inference from changing channel data; it should not be treated as a direct measurement of identity or a guarantee that a person is present.

Where to start
- Choose a compatible ESP32 CSI example in Espressif’s ESP-CSI repository.
- Decide whether your packets will come from a dedicated sender or a router, and verify the example supports that setup.
- Capture CSI and confirm that your software can distinguish the motion event you care about from ordinary channel variation.
- Connect that event to your automation layer, then verify that the selected smart device responds as intended.
