Atuin is the clearest fit for rich command context and optional sync; McFly focuses on contextual Ctrl-R results while retaining the regular history file; fzf can search history as one of many kinds of input. hstr and Suvadu are also candidates, but their current features are not established well enough here for a detailed or ranked comparison.
How the five tools differ
This is a feature-based comparison, not a tested performance ranking. The available official project material supports a more detailed comparison of Atuin, McFly, and fzf than of hstr and Suvadu.
| Tool | What it does | History model and useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Atuin | History replacement with interactive search | Stores commands in SQLite with additional context; provides search and filters, with optional sync. |
| McFly | Contextual Ctrl-R search | Records command metadata in SQLite and retains the regular shell history file. |
| fzf | General-purpose fuzzy finder | Can be used to search shell history; Atuin describes it as reading the shell history file. |
| hstr | History-search alternative | Current specifications are not stated in the official project material cited here; the September 2026 comparison identifies it as an option. |
| Suvadu | History-search alternative | Current specifications are not stated in the official project material cited here; the September 2026 comparison identifies it as an option. |
Atuin: best fit for rich context and optional sync
The Atuin project describes its tool this way: “Atuin replaces your existing shell history with a SQLite database, and records additional context for your commands.” That context includes exit code, working directory, hostname, session, and duration. Its full-screen search is bound to Ctrl-R or the up arrow. (Atuin project)
Atuin documents global, host, session, directory, and workspace filters, along with fuzzy, prefix, full-text, and daemon-fuzzy search modes. Its project materials list support for bash, zsh, fish, nushell, xonsh, and PowerShell; confirm current compatibility and installation guidance for your shell before switching. (Atuin advanced usage)
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Sync is optional: Atuin describes encrypted synchronization through either a hosted or self-hosted server, and says local history remains searchable offline before syncing changes after reconnection. Encryption and privacy are product claims from Atuin, not an independent security audit. You can also skip sync. (Atuin)
For developers using coding agents, Atuin documents an MCP server that lets agents search shell history; it says commands run through the shell can be captured and searched. Agent integrations and setup are product-specific, so check the relevant instructions before relying on a particular workflow. (Atuin agent documentation)

McFly: contextual Ctrl-R while keeping the ordinary history file
McFly focuses on replacing the Ctrl-R search experience with contextual prioritization. Its README says it considers the working directory and recently executed commands; it records exit status, timestamp, and execution directory in SQLite. It also retains the normal shell history file, which makes it a focused option if you want smarter retrieval without abandoning that file. (McFly README)
fzf: history search as part of a general-purpose tool
fzf is a general-purpose fuzzy finder rather than a history manager dedicated solely to commands. Atuin’s comparison says fzf can search shell history by reading the shell’s history file, while Atuin adds contextual metadata, database storage, and optional synchronization. That comparison is written by Atuin, so treat it as vendor framing rather than independent testing. (Atuin’s fzf comparison)

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
fzf is a natural choice if you already use it or want one fuzzy finder for different kinds of input. If you need history-specific context or controls, compare those needs against a tool such as Atuin rather than assuming all history searches work the same way.
hstr and Suvadu: alternatives with less verified detail
A third-party comparison published in September 2026 includes hstr and Suvadu alongside Atuin, fzf, and McFly, and discusses dimensions such as matching model, stored context, import, shell support, and agent workflow. The current feature claims for hstr and Suvadu are not verified against official project materials here, so there is not a sound basis for assigning them precise specifications or a rank. Choose by how you search and store history
- Storage: Decide whether you want a separate database or a search tool that works with your ordinary shell history file. Check whether the original file remains usable if you later remove the tool.
- Search workflow: Consider whether interactive Ctrl-R search is enough, or whether you want fuzzy, prefix, full-text, contextual ranking, or command-line filters.
- Context: Identify whether you need to narrow results by directory, session, host, workspace, exit status, or time. The documented Atuin filters include global, host, session, directory, and workspace scopes.
- Shell compatibility: Verify support for your actual shell and operating system in current official documentation; a list of supported shells does not establish compatibility with every platform or setup.
- Sync and privacy: Decide whether local-only history is sufficient or whether you want hosted or self-hosted synchronization. Treat product security statements as vendor claims unless you have separate audit evidence.
- Setup and reversibility: Review import steps and shell-initialization changes, and understand how to return to your previous workflow before replacing existing history.
Which tool should you try first?
- Choose Atuin if you want command metadata, multiple search scopes, and the option to sync across machines.
- Choose McFly if contextual Ctrl-R results are the priority and retaining the standard history file matters to you.
- Choose fzf if you already rely on it or want a general-purpose fuzzy finder that can also search command history.
- Investigate hstr or Suvadu if either interests you, but verify current features, shell support, and maintenance status from the project’s own documentation before adopting it.
These recommendations reflect documented features, not comparative speed, accuracy, or an independently verified ranking.
