Continental completed its acquisition of Siemens VDO Automotive AG on December 3, 2007, after the responsible antitrust authorities approved the transaction without conditions. Continental had announced the deal on July 25, 2007.
What Continental acquired
Continental’s July 25, 2007 announcement said it would acquire the automotive products business concentrated in Siemens VDO Automotive AG from Siemens AG. Continental’s 2007 annual report describes an agreement to acquire all Siemens VDO Automotive AG shares and its subsidiaries.
The announced transaction was intended to bring together automotive technologies and products. Continental described its strategic aim as becoming a more integrated systems provider, combining capabilities in safety, environmental technologies, and vehicle information, including driver assistance, sensors, telematics, and vehicle interfaces. This was Continental’s stated rationale, not proof of the deal’s eventual results.
Why reported acquisition values differ
Continental reported several figures on different bases. They should not be treated as competing estimates of one identical payment.

What Continental forecast—and what the sources establish
Continental’s 2007 announcement forecast that integration would be complete by the end of 2009 and projected at least €170 million in annual net synergies from 2010. These were targets announced at the time; the cited company materials do not establish whether they were achieved.

The announcement also described the combined businesses using historical figures based on 2006: around €25 billion in annual sales and nearly 140,000 employees. Those numbers describe Continental and Siemens VDO together at that time, not the companies today. Continental’s 2008 annual report described the company as fifth worldwide in the automotive supplier industry after the acquisition.

The acquisition and the later VDO brand changes are separate events. In a November 3, 2020 release, Continental said VDO would become Continental for passenger-car spare parts and service equipment. VDO would remain the brand for tachographs, fleet-management systems, data-based services, and related workshop business. Continental said the products would not change as a result of the passenger-car aftermarket name change.
