The incident’s recorded impact window was 14:00–14:59 UTC; a spike in Down Detector submissions reported by TechRadar was a third-party signal, not an official count of affected users. Anthropic’s status page showed mixed information when checked on October 4, so consult its live status page for the latest update.
Is Claude down right now?
As of October 4, 2026, Anthropic’s status page displayed components labeled operational alongside an investigation notice for degraded performance affecting claude.ai, platform.claude.com, the Claude API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork. Because those indicators were mixed, they do not support a definitive claim that Claude is either fully operational or broadly down at this moment. Check Anthropic’s live status page for updates.
What Anthropic confirmed about the September 29 outage
Anthropic’s incident record says elevated errors affected Claude.ai—including its desktop and mobile apps—Claude Code, Claude Cowork and the Claude API on September 29, 2026. The affected-products list describes the services in the incident report; it does not establish that every user or region experienced a failure.

It said errors were mitigated at 14:36 UTC, most services had recovered by 14:59 UTC, and the incident was marked resolved at 16:27 UTC. What the Down Detector surge does—and does not—show
TechRadar reported that Down Detector submissions spiked, including a snapshot of more than 11,800 reports at 10:17 a.m. ET. That figure is a count of reports shown in third-party coverage, not an official Anthropic tally of verified affected customers. TechRadar’s article contains inconsistent date references, including September 20 and September 29, so it should not be used to establish the incident chronology. Anthropic’s incident log is the better source for confirmed scope and timestamps. Read TechRadar’s outage coverage.

What to do if Claude is failing for you
- Check the official status page: Open status.claude.com and look for an active incident or investigation affecting the service you use.
- Retry a failed request: During elevated errors, a later attempt may succeed, but repeated retries are not a guarantee of delivery.
- Check whether your message was saved: If a conversation failed during the September 29 impact window, Anthropic warned that some messages might not have been saved. Do not assume an unsaved message is recoverable.
- Recheck before troubleshooting locally: If the status page reports an active service incident, local device changes may not resolve a service-side problem. Follow Anthropic’s updates for recovery information.
