You can hand AI agents useful backlog work to do while you are away, but the safe version is a bounded, reviewable queue—not an unattended grant of broad access. Give each task a clear deliverable and stop condition, restrict tools and permissions, and treat the morning’s output as a proposal that still needs checks and human approval before consequential actions.

Can AI agents work through a backlog overnight?

They can work on long-running tasks, but “overnight” is not a guarantee of completion, correctness, or safe autonomy. The right approach is to design the work so that an agent can make useful progress within defined limits and leave results you can inspect. OpenAI’s practical guide to building agents recommends starting with a single agent and adding orchestration only when the task requires it. More agents do not compensate for unclear instructions or excessive permissions.

OpenAI reported that 70.2% of sampled individual Codex users made at least one request estimated to exceed an hour of human work, based on a May 2026 measurement. That describes the estimated length of user requests, not work verified as completed, an overnight success rate, or a reliability measure. (OpenAI’s Codex usage analysis.)

How should you prepare a backlog for an agent?

Start with a small queue of tasks that can be evaluated independently. Prefer work that produces an inspectable artifact, such as a code diff, a draft, a test report, or a concise status summary. Avoid assigning a vague goal such as “fix everything” when you cannot tell what changes would count as success.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Deliverable: State what the agent must return or change—for example, a proposed patch and a list of tests run.
  • Scope: Identify the files, project area, or documents it may work on. Explicitly exclude unrelated systems and data.
  • Acceptance checks: Name the relevant tests, formatting rules, or review criteria. Do not imply that passing automated checks alone proves correctness.
  • Stop condition: Tell the agent when to stop and report a blocker rather than guessing, expanding scope, or taking a consequential action.
  • Allowed actions: Distinguish actions it may perform from actions it may only recommend. Keep publishing, merging, deployment, financial actions, account changes, and external communication behind appropriate human checks.

For example: “Inspect the failing unit tests in this module, propose the smallest relevant code change, run the named test command, and return the diff plus results. Do not change credentials, access the network, merge, or deploy. If the failure appears unrelated to this module, stop and explain why.” This kind of instruction makes scope and review expectations visible; it is not a guarantee that the agent will follow them perfectly.

Which OpenAI agent approach fits the work?

OpenAI documents three broad approaches. They differ in how much of the runtime and orchestration the service handles versus how much your application controls. They are not interchangeable “overnight scheduler” products, and the documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal leave-it-running-overnight mode. Check current product capabilities and availability when choosing an implementation.

Approach What the documentation describes Best fit to consider
Agents API A managed Codex harness for long-running tasks, with saved progress and managed infrastructure. When you want the service to handle more runtime and state management; assess sandbox setup and tool integration needs.
Agents SDK An agent loop, reusable agents, tools, and handoffs inside your application; your application controls deployment, storage, approvals, and runtime integration. When you need application-level control and customization and can take on the associated engineering and operations work.
Responses API Direct model responses with a more manually controlled integration. When you want flexibility and direct integration control and are prepared to build more orchestration and state management yourself.

These descriptions come from OpenAI’s agent documentation. The choice is fundamentally about runtime responsibility and control, not a promise that one option will finish a particular queue unattended.

How do you limit access without making the task useless?

Use both technical execution boundaries and action approvals. A sandbox controls what the agent can technically reach—for example, writable locations or network access. An approval policy determines when it must pause and ask permission. One does not replace the other; as OpenAI puts it in its description of Codex security, “Approvals and sandboxing work together.”

  • Grant only the tools and credentials needed for the specific backlog item.
  • Limit filesystem access to the relevant working area instead of granting broad write access.
  • Disable network access unless the task needs it; if network access is necessary, constrain it where possible.
  • Set approval requirements separately for sensitive operations, such as shell commands or changes that affect external systems.
  • Use privilege reduction when writes or network access are allowed, so a mistake has a smaller potential impact.

For applications built with the Agents SDK or Responses API, do not assume Codex Auto-review protections are automatically present. OpenAI’s SDK guardrails guidance says developers must build review and enforcement into their own harnesses. Guardrails can validate inputs, outputs, and tool behavior; human approval pauses let a person accept or reject a sensitive tool action.

What should you do about prompt injection in backlog items?

Backlog content is not automatically trustworthy just because it appears inside a project. A pull request description, issue, commit message, screenshot, or repository instruction file can contain text intended to redirect an agent. Treat that material as data to analyze, not as authority to override the task’s scope or security rules.

OpenAI’s Codex Action security guidance warns about attacker-controlled pull request text, commit messages, repository instructions, and screenshots. For automated GitHub runs, narrow who can trigger the workflow, use the least-privileged permission profile that still supports the task, and reduce privileges when writes or network access are enabled. The guidance also recommends placing the Codex Action as the last step in a job because the agent may affect host state.

These precautions matter most when an agent can write files, run commands, access secrets, or interact with external services. A task that only reads a bounded set of material and returns a report has a smaller potential blast radius than one that can also alter a repository or send messages.

Which actions should wait for your approval?

Keep actions that are sensitive, difficult to reverse, or high-stakes behind human oversight. OpenAI’s practical guide says: “High-risk actions: Actions that are sensitive, irreversible, or have high stakes should trigger human oversight until confidence in the agent’s reliability grows.” That is guidance from OpenAI, not an independent standard or a substitute for deciding what is risky in your own environment.

  • Review code, document, or configuration edits before accepting them.
  • Require approval for shell commands with significant side effects and for sensitive tool or MCP actions.
  • Keep merges, deployments, purchases, account changes, cancellations, and external messages gated until a person checks the specific action and its context.

OpenAI’s Operator and Computer-Using Agent write-up describes confirmation before external side effects, active supervision on sensitive sites such as email, and layered defenses against prompt injection. It also notes the risk of unintended actions such as sending an email, purchasing the wrong item, or deleting a document. Those safeguards describe that product context; they should not be assumed to exist in every browser or computer-use agent. (OpenAI’s computer-use agent overview.)

What should you check in the morning?

  1. Inspect the run’s output and logs. Confirm what the agent attempted, what it changed, and where it stopped or encountered errors.
  2. Review every proposed change. Read diffs and generated documents in context; do not treat a completion message as proof that the work is correct.
  3. Run the project’s normal checks. Use the usual tests, validation, or review process for the affected system. A task-specific check is useful evidence, not automatic approval to ship.
  4. Decide what to accept. Keep, revise, or reject each result yourself, and perform consequential actions only through the review gates appropriate to your project.
  5. Update the queue. Record unresolved blockers or follow-up work as separate tasks with their own scope and acceptance checks.

OpenAI reports Codex Auto-review evaluation results of 90.3% recall on a synthetic overeagerness evaluation and 99.3% combined recall on synthetic prompt-injection cases. These are company-reported results on described synthetic evaluations, not guarantees for an individual deployment or independently established real-world error rates. OpenAI also says repeated denials can stop a trajectory. (OpenAI’s Codex security and Auto-review announcement.)
