It gives systems a common format for describing items such as tests, instruments, units under test, and configurations. That is the standard’s interoperability goal; the available IEEE material does not quantify deployment savings or adoption.
What ATML does
IEEE describes ATML as a standard exchange medium for sharing information between ATS components. Its stated scope includes test data, resource data, diagnostic data, and historic data, with XML serving as the exchange format. See the IEEE P1671 project page.
In practical terms, ATML provides structured descriptions that different parts of a test system can exchange, rather than requiring each component to interpret a proprietary representation. It does not, by itself, guarantee that two implementations will interoperate: the relevant ATML part, edition, XML schema, and implementation still need to align.
Which IEEE 1671 document covers the information you need?
ATML is a standards family, so select a part according to the object or information you need to describe. The IEEE records below identify different scopes and publication statuses; status should be checked for the exact part and edition before an implementation decision.

How to choose a part for an implementation
- Identify the data object. Determine whether the exchange concerns a test or UUT description, an instrument, a test configuration, an adapter, or another station-related item.
- Find the matching part and edition. Use the IEEE record for that specific document rather than assuming the framework or series bundle covers every implementation detail.
- Check status and corrections. Confirm the edition’s current status and review any corrigendum that affects its text or XML schemas. Status is not uniform across the family.
- Align the implementation artifacts. Verify that the XML schema and the receiving and sending systems correspond to the same applicable part and edition.
IEEE’s standard records indicate purchase access to the documents. The framework, UUT, or instrumentation record above is the appropriate starting point depending on the implementation’s scope; do not assume every useful document is freely available.
Can software help create or validate ATML data?
UTRS describes ATML Workbench as a suite for defining automatic test equipment capabilities, test requirements, and test approaches. Its page says graphical forms guide data entry and validate it against the relevant schema; it also describes a Reader that converts CASS TPSI files to the 1671.4 test-configuration standard. The page is a lead rather than confirmation of current product status: verify availability, version, supported standards, and vendor terms before relying on it. UTRS ATML Workbench.

What ATML does—and does not—establish
ATML’s documented purpose is to provide a common XML exchange format for information used across ATS components. The reviewed IEEE and vendor pages do not establish how widely it is deployed or quantify reductions in integration time, cost, or errors. Treat “simplifies” as the intended benefit of standardized descriptions, not a measured outcome guaranteed for every test system.
