Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →An .ithmb file is usually a legacy Apple-device thumbnail store, not a single JPEG or PNG photo. It may contain multiple thumbnails, so changing the extension will not make it readable in an ordinary image viewer. To inspect or export its contents, work from a copy and use software that understands the relevant ITHMB layout. Exported pictures should be treated as thumbnails—not as recovered full-resolution originals.
What an ITHMB file contains
ITHMB files are associated with photo directories on some iPods, iPads, and iPhones. Vendor documentation describes them as stores of uncompressed graphic data containing images of the same size; a device may create another file when one reaches its maximum size. This is vendor-described format behavior, not an Apple-published ITHMB specification. The images’ dimensions and the file’s layout vary by device and software era.
Because a file may hold a collection of image data rather than one standard picture, renaming .ithmb to .jpg or .png is not a dependable way to open it. Use a viewer or converter designed for ITHMB files instead. The vendor’s guide describes viewing a collection, converting an individual selection, or batch-converting images to JPEG, PNG, or BMP. See the iThmb Converter guide.
Where to look for ITHMB files and companion indexes
Search a copy of the device’s photo folder, a backup, or recovered files for the .ithmb extension. Vendor documentation gives example parent paths including mobile/Media/Photos/ and mobile/Media/PhotoData/, with files often stored in a Thumbs or Thumbnails subfolder. These are examples, not universal paths.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Folder and filename patterns differ across device generations and iOS versions. Earlier layouts may use PhotoDatabase and Thumbs; later ones may use Photos.sqlite and Thumbnails. Names can include patterns such as FXXXX_Y.ITHMB or dimension-style names such as 128x128.ithmb. The vendor notes that names and file counts vary, so do not assume a single naming scheme. Review the vendor FAQ on locations and layouts.
Open or convert ITHMB files safely
- Make a working copy. Copy the device folder, backup, or recovered files before attempting conversion. Keep the original ITHMB files and nearby index files together; do not delete or alter the only copy.
- Find the relevant files. Search the copy for
.ithmb, checking photo folders and theirThumbsorThumbnailssubfolders. Preserve nearby files such asPhotoDatabaseorPhotos.sqlite. - Open the file in ITHMB-aware software. Select an ITHMB file in a compatible viewer or converter and inspect the collection it recognizes. Ordinary image viewers may not parse the format.
- Export what you need. Convert a selected image or use batch conversion if available. The vendor’s guide lists JPEG, PNG, and BMP as output formats; the available options depend on the software and the file being read. View the vendor’s conversion instructions.
- Check the output before changing your archive. Open the exported images and retain the originals and indexes until you have confirmed the results. The vendor says its trial output is watermarked and that registered users should regenerate converted files for unwatermarked output; this is a vendor-specific policy that may change.
Why keep the index files
An associated index may help a compatible program connect image data with information such as image names, creation dates, or ratings. The iThmb Converter vendor lists support for certain device ITHMB files, iPod Photo Cache files, and index files including Photo Database, ArtworkDB, and Photos.sqlite. It describes metadata recovery when an index is available, but that is a conditional software capability—not a guarantee that every index will be present, readable, or matched successfully. Check the vendor’s listed format and index features.

What to expect from exported images
An image exported from an ITHMB cache is a thumbnail or other stored rendition, not proof that the original full-resolution photo has been recovered. The format-specific sources describe thumbnail files and do not establish a way to reconstruct missing original-resolution image data from the cache alone. Keep expectations realistic if the original photos are missing.
If a file will not decode
A failed conversion can mean the utility does not support that device-era layout, the file is incomplete or damaged, or the file needs a different decoding approach. The vendor guide notes that manual decoding may be necessary and offers investigation of submitted files. That offer is not an independent endorsement of uploading private material. If the files contain sensitive photos, keep them local unless you have deliberately assessed the privacy implications of sending them to a third party.

Apple’s Quick Look documentation explains thumbnail generation for common file types and support for custom types through thumbnail extensions, but it does not name ITHMB. It therefore does not establish that macOS natively opens ITHMB files. Apple Quick Look Thumbnailing documentation.

If comparing utilities, focus on whether the program supports the relevant device or software era, reads companion indexes, offers single-image and batch export, and provides the output formats you need. Check trial restrictions and current terms before relying on a program: these details can change, and vendor feature claims are not independent compatibility tests.
