Mailchimp may be worth it if its features fit your email workflow and your contact count, send volume, and billing rules fit your budget. Its Free plan has firm caps, while paid plan prices and send allowances depend on the contact tier you select. Mailchimp’s published terms clarify those limits, but they do not establish how well the service will perform for a particular business.
Mailchimp plans at a glance
Mailchimp offers four Marketing plan families: Free, Essentials, Standard, and Premium. The Free plan has fixed published limits. Paid plans are priced by contact tier, and their monthly send allowances are tied to the selected maximum contact count.
| Plan | Monthly email allowance | Other plan details |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 500 sends per month, with a 250-send daily limit | 250 contacts, one seat, and one audience |
| Essentials | 10 times the selected maximum contact count per month | Features, seats, audiences, and support vary by plan terms |
| Standard | 12 times the selected maximum contact count per month | Features, seats, audiences, and support vary by plan terms |
| Premium | 15 times the selected maximum contact count per month | Mailchimp presents this as its most advanced tier and includes priority support |
These are vendor-stated plan terms on Mailchimp’s Marketing pricing page and its plan overview. Check those pages and the billing screen for current details, because pricing, localized estimates, and offers can change.
How much does Mailchimp cost?
There is no single paid-plan price that applies to every customer. Mailchimp’s price varies with the contact tier, currency, and any current offer. Enter your contact count on the pricing page, then verify the amount and terms shown for your account before subscribing. A teaser starting price or introductory discount is not necessarily the recurring price for your contact tier.

Before estimating a bill, check how Mailchimp counts contacts. A person present in multiple audiences counts more than once toward the plan total. Mailchimp says archived, cleaned, and deleted contacts do not count toward the contact total or plan price. Its explanations are available in the plan overview and contact-count pricing guidance. Review your audience structure and list hygiene, then confirm the selected tier in your account.
What happens when you exceed a limit?
Mailchimp says exceeding the selected contact or email-send limit can result in an additional charge. The available plan-change information does not specify one universal overage amount, so do not assume a particular fee: check the terms displayed for your account. Mailchimp also says accounts can be paused and plans can be changed. A downgrade from any paid plan to Free is allowed only once over the life of the account. See Mailchimp’s plan-change and pause guidance.

Which Mailchimp plan fits your needs?
Free: a small, tightly capped starting point
Free is the clearest fit when 250 contacts, 500 monthly sends, a 250-send daily cap, one seat, and one audience cover the job. Those limits leave little room for a larger list or frequent campaigns, so compare them with your actual contact total and planned sending cadence rather than treating “free” as a guarantee of ongoing suitability.
Essentials: check the send allowance against your campaign schedule
Essentials allows monthly sends equal to 10 times the maximum contact count selected for the plan. Compare that allowance with the number of contacts you intend to email and how often you send. Also check the current plan page for the specific seats, audiences, templates, reporting, and support provisions you need.

Standard’s monthly allowance is 12 times its selected maximum contact count. Mailchimp distinguishes tiers by more than send volume: review its current feature list for the automation, personalization, role access, and reporting capabilities your workflow needs before choosing this tier.
Premium: for needs that match its advanced controls and support
Premium’s allowance is 15 times the selected maximum contact count. Mailchimp positions it as the most advanced plan and lists priority support. Consider it only if its current features, access controls, or support terms solve a specific need; a higher send multiplier alone does not establish that the plan is better value.

How to judge whether Mailchimp is worth it
Assess the service against the work it must do and the full cost at your actual list size. Before choosing, compare:
- Total bill at your contact count: account for duplicate people across audiences and exclude records Mailchimp says do not count, then confirm the live tier and price.
- Send allowance: estimate sends per month and whether a daily cap could constrain your schedule.
- Workflow features: identify the automation and personalization functions your campaigns require and verify which plan includes them.
- Team access: check seat counts, permissions, and the number of audiences available on the plan.
- Support: decide what assistance your team needs and whether the plan’s support terms meet it.
- Switching requirements: account for migration effort and integrations you rely on; confirm that each required integration works for your use case.
Mailchimp’s official plan pages support comparing these plan terms, but they do not establish independent deliverability, usability, customer results, or return on investment. Those outcomes depend on a business’s needs and use, so the published limits alone cannot show whether Mailchimp will outperform another service.
