At a February 2021 congressional hearing, SolarWinds CEO Sudhakar Ramakrishna said an intern had used the weak password “solarwinds123” on a GitHub server in 2017. The SEC later alleged that the credential was publicly available and that a researcher warned the company in 2019. SolarWinds’ later apology corrected the intern framing; the available sources do not establish that this password caused the Orion supply-chain compromise.
What was the “solarwinds123” password?
“Solarwinds123” was a weak password that became the subject of questions about SolarWinds’ security practices. At a February 26, 2021 House hearing, Rep. Katie Porter asked Ramakrishna: “Is it true that some servers at your company were secured with this Cracker Jack password, ‘SolarWinds123’?”
Ramakrishna replied that he believed an intern had used it on one of his GitHub servers in 2017, that it had been reported to SolarWinds’ security team, and that it was immediately removed. That is what the CEO testified; it does not independently establish the full history of the credential. The House hearing transcript records the exchange.
What is known about how long the credential was exposed?
Public accounts describe different parts of the timeline, and they should not be collapsed into one settled chronology.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| Account | What it says | What the statement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Ramakrishna’s testimony, February 26, 2021 | He said an intern used the password on a GitHub server in 2017, reported it to the security team, and it was immediately removed. | The CEO’s account at the hearing, not independent confirmation of the dates or complete exposure history. |
| IT Pro report, March 1, 2021 | It reported that the credential was publicly accessible through GitHub from June 2018 until SolarWinds addressed it in November 2019. | A reported period of public accessibility that differs from the hearing account. IT Pro’s report gives this chronology. |
| SEC complaint, October 30, 2023 | The SEC alleged that a researcher notified SolarWinds in November 2019 that the password for an Akamai server used to distribute software updates was publicly available. | An allegation in a civil complaint, not a final judicial finding. The SEC complaint describes the alleged warning. |
The hearing testimony focuses on the CEO’s account of an intern’s use and removal; IT Pro reports a longer public-accessibility period; and the SEC complaint recounts a researcher’s warning about an update-distribution server. These are attributed accounts, not proof of one complete, uncontested timeline.
Did the password cause the Orion hack?
The sources support treating the exposed credential as a security risk, but they do not establish that it caused the Orion supply-chain compromise. The SEC complaint alleged that the credential was available for an update server and reproduced the researcher’s warning that someone could upload malicious executable code and update it with a SolarWinds product release. That is the researcher’s reported concern, not evidence that the password was used to cause the Orion attack.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
It is important to keep three claims separate: the password was weak; accounts say it was publicly accessible and that SolarWinds was alerted; and it caused the Orion compromise. The first two are described in the cited testimony, reporting and complaint, with the limits noted above. The third is not established by those sources.
What did the SEC allege about SolarWinds’ controls?
In its 2023 complaint, the SEC described an internal assessment that reviewed 27 Identification and Authentication controls. According to the complaint, none was rated “in place,” seven were rated as possibly in place, and 20 were rated as having no program or practice in place. These figures are complaint-reported evidence, not adjudicated findings.

The SEC filed its civil complaint against SolarWinds and CISO Timothy G. Brown on October 30, 2023, alleging cybersecurity disclosure and control failures. The complaint’s allegations should not be treated as findings by a court.
Did SolarWinds apologize for blaming an intern?
Yes. In remarks at the RSA Conference reported on May 19, 2021, Ramakrishna said: “What happened at the congressional hearing where we attributed this to an intern was not appropriate and is not what we’re about.” His apology addressed the attribution made at the hearing; it does not change the distinct claims about the credential’s exposure or establish who was responsible for the full timeline.

What happened to the SEC case?
On November 20, 2025, the SEC announced that its civil enforcement action against SolarWinds and Brown had been dismissed with prejudice. The agency said the dismissal was an exercise of discretion and did not necessarily reflect its position in another case. The dismissal is the case’s current disposition; it does not turn the complaint’s allegations into judicial findings. The SEC’s litigation release states the disposition and caveat.
