“Zero proof” is a common menu and marketing phrase for drinks presented as alcohol-free alternatives, but it is not established as a universal legal definition. It also does not, by itself, confirm that a drink contains 0.0% alcohol. Check the exact product’s stated ABV and label; rules vary by beverage type and jurisdiction.
What does “zero proof” mean on a drink label?
In beverage marketing and menus, “zero proof” commonly describes alcohol-free drink options, including spirit-style alternatives and ready-to-drink cocktails. It is a category phrase, not a reliable substitute for the product’s ingredient and alcohol information. The reviewed category coverage illustrates usage; it does not establish a universal legal definition.
In the narrower context of distilled spirits, “proof” is a measure derived from alcohol by volume (ABV). The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) says spirits proof is calculated by multiplying ABV by two. That calculation applies to spirits proof; it does not define every use of “zero proof.” TTB distilled spirits labeling FAQs
Is zero proof the same as non-alcoholic?
Not necessarily. The phrases are used in overlapping ways, but “zero proof” alone does not tell you a drink’s exact ABV. Even “non-alcoholic” may not mean 0.0% under the specific U.S. rule for malt beverages.

What U.S. rules say for malt beverages
For malt beverages, TTB guidance allows the term “non-alcoholic” on a label only when the statement “contains less than 0.5 percent (or .5%) alcohol by volume” appears immediately adjacent to it, in readily legible printing, on a completely contrasting background. TTB also says “alcohol free” may be used only for malt beverages containing no alcohol. These are U.S. malt-beverage labeling rules, not universal rules for all drinks or countries. What is a zero-proof cocktail?
A zero-proof cocktail is generally a mixed drink presented as an alcohol-free alternative to a cocktail. It may be sold ready to drink or made by combining ingredients such as a spirit-style alternative, mixers, and other flavorings. “Zero-proof” in the name is not enough to establish a specific ABV, so check the drink’s own label or menu description when alcohol content matters.

How to check whether a drink suits your needs
- Find the exact ABV. Look on the package or product listing for an alcohol-by-volume statement. Do not infer 0.0% from “zero proof” or “non-alcoholic.”
- Read the full label. Check ingredients and any nearby alcohol-content statement, especially if you need to avoid alcohol entirely.
- Confirm the format. Determine whether it is ready to drink or intended as a cocktail ingredient, then compare it with the use you have in mind.
- Check the specific jurisdiction and beverage category. The cited TTB requirements concern U.S. malt beverages; they should not be applied to other product categories or countries without checking the applicable rules.
