Distributed tracing follows a request as it moves through separately deployed services. It records the operations along the way as connected spans, giving engineers a timeline and evidence of how the work was handed off. The trace does not diagnose a root cause by itself: it helps engineers investigate alongside logs, metrics, and knowledge of the system.

How does distributed tracing work across microservices?

When a request crosses service boundaries, each component can record its part of the work. Those records are linked into a trace so an engineer can see the request’s path and how long its operations took. For example, a web service might call an order service, which then calls a database or payment service. A trace can show those operations in context rather than as unrelated timing records.

That connection depends on passing trace context from one component to the next. Without it, a downstream service may still record its own operation, but its span cannot reliably be joined to the caller’s trace.

What are traces and spans?

A trace represents activity across the components involved in a transaction. It is made up of spans: records of individual operations that can be arranged in parent-child relationships. A root span commonly represents the overall request, while child spans describe sub-operations such as service calls.

In OpenTelemetry, a span includes a name, context, parent reference, start and end timestamps, attributes, events, links, and status. Together, these details can help answer questions such as which operation was slow, what work it performed, and how it related to other operations. A span tree shows relationships; its timing offers evidence, not an automatic explanation of why a problem occurred.

How does trace context get propagated between services?

When a service calls another service, the caller passes context containing the trace ID and its span ID. The receiving service uses that context to create a span in the same trace and identify the caller’s span as its parent. The mechanism that serializes and moves this information is called context propagation.

OpenTelemetry’s default propagator follows the W3C Trace Context format. For HTTP, the W3C traceparent header carries a version, trace ID, parent ID, and trace flags. The standard is designed to let different tracing systems exchange context and preserve correlation across vendor boundaries. The W3C Trace Context Recommendation, dated 23 November 2021, defines standard HTTP headers and a value format for propagating context. Support still depends on services and intermediaries preserving and handling the relevant headers.

For messaging systems or protocols without ordinary HTTP headers, the general pattern is the same: the sender injects context into a carrier or request metadata, and the receiver extracts it. The exact carrier and behavior depend on the protocol and implementation; automatic propagation is not guaranteed for every broker or language. Where existing instrumentation does not support the protocol, OpenTelemetry’s Propagators API allows custom propagation.

What is OpenTelemetry, and do you still need a tracing backend?

OpenTelemetry is an instrumentation and telemetry framework, not a storage and analysis backend. Its Collector can receive traces, metrics, and other telemetry, then process, enrich, transform, or sample the data before exporting it to one or more monitoring or tracing backends. Processing can include scrubbing personal information. A backend is still needed to store and analyze trace data; OpenTelemetry’s context-propagation guide uses Jaeger as one example of a place to view connected spans, not as the only option.

When evaluating a backend, compare the factors that affect your system and operating requirements:

How should you think about sampling and tracing overhead?

Sampling reduces how much trace data is retained or processed. Instrumentation breadth also matters: recording more operations produces more detail, but affects the volume of telemetry your system handles. There is no universally correct sample rate or overhead figure established here; actual costs depend on the instrumentation, workload, SDK, sampling approach, and deployment. Measure the effect in the system you intend to operate.

Google’s 2010 Dapper paper is historical evidence about the trade-offs, not a present-day benchmark. It describes design goals of low overhead, application-level transparency, and broad deployment, and identifies sampling and instrumentation of common libraries as choices that supported Dapper in its environment. Those choices explain why sampling and reusable instrumentation matter, but they do not prescribe a rate or design for every modern system.

What is the status of W3C Trace Context Level 2?

W3C Trace Context Recommendation 1 is the published Recommendation dated 23 November 2021. Trace Context Level 2 was presented as a Candidate Recommendation Draft when checked on 4 October 2026. That draft adds trace-ID and span-ID generation considerations and a random trace-ID flag, but its status section says Candidate Recommendation publication is not W3C endorsement and that the draft may change, be replaced, or be obsoleted. Treat Level 2 as work in progress rather than a finalized standard.
