If the list contains numbers or other values, convert each value to a string first, for example with map(str, items). Use str(items) only when you want Python’s list representation, including its brackets and quotes.
Join string elements with a separator
str.join() concatenates strings from an iterable, placing the string you call it on between successive items. For example:
names = ["Ada", "Grace", "Linus"]
result = ", ".join(names)
print(result) # Ada, Grace, LinusThe separator can be any string. An empty string joins values without anything between them; a space, comma and space, or newline produces a different format. Choose the separator to match the output you need. The Python 3.12.15 built-in types documentation describes join and its string-element requirement.
Join a list containing numbers or mixed types
join does not automatically convert elements. If any item is not a string, including a number or a bytes object, it raises TypeError. Convert the elements first:

result = ", ".join(map(str, values))
print(result) # age, 42, TrueThis applies each value’s str() conversion before joining. The Python Guide documents map(str, iterable) as one conversion pattern.
Choose how to convert values before joining
map and a generator expression both supply converted strings as an iterator, without first building a list of converted values. A list comprehension creates that additional list. Pick the form that best fits your code’s readability and storage needs; documentation describing these behaviors does not establish that one is faster for every workload.

The Python Functional Programming HOWTO explains that generator expressions compute values as needed, while list comprehensions construct a list.
Use str(my_list) for the list representation
str(items) turns the list itself into a printable representation. It preserves list-style punctuation rather than joining just the element values:

Combine many fragments efficiently
When building a string from many pieces in a loop, collect the fragments and join them once instead of repeatedly concatenating onto a growing string:

result = " ".join(parts)The Python Programming FAQ recommends putting strings into a list and calling str.join at the end. It warns that, in the general case, the total runtime cost of repeated concatenation can be quadratic in total string length; this is a qualitative complexity warning, not a benchmark for every program.
Handle nested lists deliberately
join does not recursively flatten nested data. Converting an inner list with str() gives that inner list’s representation, including brackets and quotes where applicable. If you want a flattened output, define which levels to flatten and how to format each value before joining; do not assume a call to join will flatten the input for you.

Fix the common join() error
If you see TypeError while joining, check whether every item is a string. For example, ", ".join(["x", 2]) fails because 2 is an integer. Convert the values first with ", ".join(map(str, items)), or use a generator expression if you prefer to make the conversion explicit inline.
