Inspect the exact expression being converted, then either select one value using the program’s intended rule or keep and process all the values as an array. Don’t reshape or flatten the data just to suppress the error: that does not decide which value the program should use.
What the error means
A scalar is one value, such as the number 7. An array can contain one value or many. The error occurs when a conversion that expects one value receives an array with a different number of elements—commonly more than one.
“Size 1” refers to the element count, not the number of dimensions. For example, an array with shape (1, 1) contains one element; a one-dimensional array with several values contains several. NumPy’s official ndarray.item() reference documents how to return an array element as a standard Python scalar.
Find the value causing the error
Inspect the exact expression passed to item(), a scalar conversion, or another function that expects one value. Check its shape, number of elements, and contents:

print(result.size)For an object that does not expose NumPy’s shape and size attributes, inspect its type and contents using the methods available for that object. The goal is to establish whether it holds one value or multiple values before changing the code.
Choose the fix that matches the intended result
If you need one specific element
Select it explicitly, but only when its position is meaningful to the algorithm. For a NumPy array, item(index) returns the indexed element as a scalar:

value = result.item(0)For a pandas extension array, item(index) likewise accesses an element by index. The pandas ExtensionArray.item() implementation documents that calling it without an index requires the array to have exactly one element; otherwise it raises this error. An explicit index is appropriate only if that element is the one the program should use.
If you need the first match
Search functions can produce multiple matching positions. For example, np.where returns the positions where a condition is true. If you use it to find a minimum, tied minimum values can produce more than one position. A reported example of this error arose from repeated minimum indices returned by np.where (Stack Overflow, posted January 18, 2022).

If the intended rule is specifically “use the first match,” select the first position deliberately. If ties have a different meaning in your application, handle all matching positions or define another tie-breaking rule instead. Taking index zero simply to make the error disappear can silently discard valid matches.
If multiple values matter
Keep the result array-valued and use an operation that handles multiple values. That may mean applying the next calculation to the whole array, indexing the result where appropriate, or using an explicit reduction—such as a sum or minimum—when the task calls for a single aggregate. Choose based on what the computation means, not on which operation happens to avoid the exception.

Why item() may fail
With no index, item() is suitable when the array contains exactly one element. If it contains several, there is no unambiguous scalar to return, so the call fails. NumPy and pandas both document indexed element access; use an index when a particular element is intended, or retain the array when multiple values are meaningful.
What about np.asscalar?
Older examples may use np.asscalar. A Stack Overflow answer posted in 2022 describes it as deprecated since NumPy 1.16 and recommends ndarray.item(). Treat that as the answer’s historical note rather than a current removal guarantee; check your installed NumPy version and use the official NumPy item() documentation for the supported method’s behavior.
