SyntaxError: invalid syntax means Python could not parse your code, so it cannot run that code as written. Start with the reported line and the statement just before it: the error marker shows where Python detected a problem, but the actual omission may be earlier. Check punctuation, delimiters, quotes, line breaks, indentation, and whether your Python version supports the syntax you used.

What “SyntaxError: invalid syntax” means

Python raises a SyntaxError when its parser encounters code that does not match the language grammar. As the Python built-in exception reference puts it, “Raised when the parser encounters a syntax error.” This is different from an exception that happens after valid code has begun running: a syntax error prevents the affected source from being parsed successfully.

Python can report the problem while reading a script or interactive input, or while compiling or importing source code. The message includes location information intended to help you find the issue, but that location is a clue—not a guarantee that the marked character is the original mistake.

How to locate the actual mistake

  1. Run the code in its intended environment. Use the same Python executable and version that your project uses. Note the complete error output, including filename, line number, source excerpt, and caret or reported position.
  2. Read the reported line and the preceding statement. A missing token earlier in a statement can make a later token impossible to interpret. For example, the Python Tutorial’s “Syntax Errors” section shows a missing colon before a function call: Python detects the problem at print(), even though the missing colon is the cause.
  3. Check the structure of the statement. Look for punctuation or delimiters that are missing, mismatched, or misplaced. Also check whether a quote was left open or an operator or comma was written in a way that does not fit the statement.
  4. Check where lines break. Python distinguishes physical lines from logical lines and permits line joining only in defined circumstances. A statement split across lines where joining is not allowed can produce a syntax error. The lexical analysis reference explains line joining and the tokens Python derives from indentation.
  5. Check block indentation when the context points to it. Indentation defines structure in Python. Inconsistent indentation can instead produce a more specific IndentationError or TabError; these are related parser diagnostics, not necessarily the exact generic message SyntaxError: invalid syntax. Avoid mixing tabs and spaces.
  6. Check the interpreter version. Python parses source according to the grammar supported by the interpreter actually running it. Code copied from a newer tutorial or using a newer language feature may not parse in an older runtime. Compare the syntax with the grammar reference for the relevant version.
  7. Make one focused edit and try again. Re-run compilation or the original command after each change so you can tell whether that change resolved the error or moved it.

Why the caret may point somewhere unexpected

The caret or reported position identifies where Python detected that the source no longer fit the grammar. It does not always identify the character you need to change. An omitted colon, closing delimiter, or other required token earlier in the statement can leave the next token—such as a function call—as the first thing Python cannot parse. That is why inspecting the preceding statement is part of locating the cause.

How to check parsing and compilation

You can ask Python to compile a file using the same interpreter that runs your project:

python -m py_compile path/to/your_file.py

Replace python with the project’s Python executable if it uses a different command, and replace the path with the file you are checking. This is a way to check compilation without running the program’s normal workflow; it does not make code for a different Python version compatible.

For a small snippet, ast.parse can help inspect whether Python can construct an abstract syntax tree from the source. But successful AST parsing is not a complete guarantee that the code will compile: compilation also checks constraints such as scope. See the AST documentation.

If the error is still unclear

Reduce the code to the smallest snippet that still produces the error. Keep the complete traceback and note the Python version and the command or environment used to run it. Those details make it possible to distinguish a local punctuation or line-structure mistake from a version mismatch or a problem in surrounding code.
