Open the file with newline="", then use csv.writer for rows of values or csv.DictWriter for records stored as dictionaries. The examples below create a header row and write data safely, including values that contain commas or line breaks.
Write rows from lists or other sequences
Use csv.writer when each row is an ordered sequence, such as a list or tuple. This example writes a header followed by two records:

writer.writerows(rows)Save and run the script; Python creates people.csv in the current working directory. writerows(rows) writes an iterable of rows. For a single row, call writer.writerow(row) instead. The values in each row are written in sequence as CSV fields.
Write dictionary records with a header
Use csv.DictWriter when each record is a dictionary. Set fieldnames to the column names in the order you want them in the file; writeheader() writes those names as the first row.

writer.writerows(rows)By default, a dictionary containing a key that is not in fieldnames raises ValueError. If extra keys should be discarded, pass extrasaction="ignore" when creating the writer.
Choose between writer and DictWriter

Avoid blank lines and malformed fields
Open the file with newline=""
When passing a file object to a CSV writer, use newline="" in open(). The Python documentation explains that omitting it can mishandle embedded newlines in quoted fields and can add an extra carriage return on systems that use CRLF line endings. The official Python 3.14.8 CSV documentation covers this requirement and the writer options.

Let the CSV writer handle quoting
Do not build rows by joining values with commas. A value may itself contain a comma, quote, or line break. The writer’s default minimal-quoting behavior adds quotes where needed, so those values remain part of their field rather than shifting the row’s columns.
Set encoding for the receiving program
The examples specify encoding="utf-8", a clear choice for many workflows. If the program that will open the file requires a different encoding, pass that encoding to open(); the recipient’s requirements determine the appropriate choice.

Match the CSV format expected by another application
CSV is not one perfectly uniform format: applications can differ in their delimiter, quote character, quoting rules, line endings, or encoding. The default writer uses comma delimiters and standard quoting. If the destination expects a different dialect, configure the writer’s relevant options—for example, delimiter, quotechar, and quoting—or use a named dialect. Select settings to match the consuming application rather than assuming one combination works everywhere.
Append to an existing CSV file
The examples open the destination with "w", which creates the file or truncates it if it already exists. For an append workflow, use "a" instead. Decide whether a header is already present before calling writeheader(); otherwise, appending can produce a second header row. The appropriate header policy depends on how the file is managed.

Know what CSV does—and does not—preserve
CSV stores tabular values as text, not as Python objects with their original types. The CSV writer stringifies values other than None; it writes None as an empty string, which cannot be distinguished from an originally empty value when read back. If another program needs typed values, define and document how it should convert fields such as numbers and dates.
Python’s csv module is its standard-library option for reading and writing tabular CSV data. For ordinary output, choose the writer that fits your data shape, specify the required output settings, and let the module format the fields.
