An ERP support deadline is a vendor-set milestone for a specific product and release—not a date when the software automatically stops working. What changes depends on the vendor’s policy, your exact release and update level, support contract, and any extension you have purchased. Before treating a published date as your company’s deadline to replace its ERP, establish which support ends and what coverage remains.
What changes when ERP support ends?
Support deadlines describe what the vendor will provide, not necessarily whether the software will continue to run. Depending on the product and its policy, a milestone can end routine fixes, security updates, or assisted support; it may also mark the end of a paid extension. The business system may remain usable, but running without vendor updates or help can affect security and the options available when problems arise.
Microsoft’s general lifecycle overview says that after a product reaches end of support, or a service retires, it will receive no new security updates, non-security updates, or assisted support. That is a general statement, not a guarantee that every product has identical terms: Microsoft notes that paid programs may be available for eligible products. What do mainstream, extended, and end-of-support phases provide?
Phase names and coverage depend on the vendor and product. These Microsoft Fixed Policy descriptions are not a universal ERP standard, and they should not be assumed to describe SAP or another vendor’s maintenance terms.

- Mainstream Support: For Microsoft Fixed Policy products, it includes incident support, security update support, and the ability to request non-security updates, provided the product is at a supported service-pack level.
- Extended Support: It includes paid support and security updates at no additional cost, but not warranty support, design changes, or new features. Some products may require enrollment in a paid support plan to receive certain services.
- End of support: Microsoft’s general policy says new security and non-security updates and assisted support stop, subject to exceptions such as paid programs for eligible products.
- Extended Security Updates (ESU): Microsoft describes ESU as a last-resort security-update option for certain legacy products, for up to three years after end of support. Eligibility and terms are product-specific.
Microsoft says products governed by its Fixed Policy typically receive five years of mainstream support followed by five years of extended support, with exceptions. That overview is not a promise that every Microsoft ERP product follows that schedule. Microsoft Fixed Lifecycle Policy
SAP uses different options. For SAP Business Suite 7 core applications, including SAP ERP 6.0, SAP states that mainstream maintenance runs through the end of 2027. Customers can opt for optional extended maintenance from 2028 through the end of 2030, for an additional two percentage points on the maintenance basis SAP describes. SAP Business One differs from Business Suite 7: SAP’s maintenance page lists version 10.0 in mainstream maintenance through December 31, 2028, says dates are subject to change, and says the date applies to the version—not the product overall. Which ERP deadlines illustrate the differences?
The following dates are examples for particular products, not one deadline for ERP systems as a whole. Verify the live product lifecycle entry and your contract before scheduling work.

The Microsoft Dynamics NAV dates were published in a Microsoft Dynamics 365 blog post on July 28, 2026. Dynamics SL dates are listed in Microsoft’s FAQ, last updated February 7, 2023. How to confirm the deadline that applies to your company
- Identify the deployment precisely. Record the ERP product, version or release, and service pack or update level. A product family name alone may not identify the applicable support date.
- Find the product-specific lifecycle entry. Use the vendor’s lifecycle page, release strategy, or product availability matrix. Microsoft directs customers to its product lifecycle search; SAP points customers to its Product Availability Matrix and release strategy.
- Identify which milestone the date represents. Distinguish the end of mainstream support or maintenance from the end of extended support or maintenance, product retirement, end of support, and later service-plan or licensing changes.
- Check entitlement and scope. Confirm whether your support plan is active, which release and deployment it covers, whether geography affects applicability, and whether a paid extension is available under your contract. Get confirmation from the vendor or authorized account team.
- Assess the environment before choosing a path. Inventory integrations, customizations, data, reports, security requirements, and business processes. These can affect the effort and dependencies involved in an upgrade or migration. Microsoft’s migration guidance identifies these as assessment areas.
How to compare extending support with upgrading or migrating
There is no universally best route. Compare options against the coverage you retain, the time and cost available, and the company’s ability to complete a transition before the relevant milestone.

- Coverage: Which security updates, fixes, and assisted support remain available, and for how long?
- Scope: Does the option cover your exact release, update level, and deployment?
- Terms and cost: Is an extension offered, what does it cost, and what conditions or exclusions apply?
- Execution: What implementation effort, integrations, customizations, data work, and process changes would an upgrade or migration require?
- Business risk and time: How much time remains to plan and carry out the chosen path, and what operational or security exposure does each option leave?
For SAP Business Suite 7, for example, optional extended maintenance gives participating customers a defined period beyond mainstream maintenance; it is not the same choice as SAP Business One’s maintenance arrangement. The right comparison depends on the company’s actual product and entitlements, not just the date printed on a general lifecycle page.
