Combining data from cameras, radar and other sensors can give advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) a more useful picture of nearby traffic than any one sensor provides alone. That can improve object tracking and support functions such as adaptive cruise control (ACC) and automatic emergency braking (AEB). The benefit is not automatic: it depends on what each sensor measures, how the system aligns and associates the data, the scenarios tested, and what happens when a sensor degrades.

What sensor fusion adds to ADAS

Each sensor observes the road in a different way. Sensor fusion brings those observations together to build an environmental model: which objects are present, where they are, and how they are moving. A tracking system can then update an object’s estimated position over time rather than treating every sensor detection as unrelated.

This matters to ADAS functions that must respond to surrounding traffic. A camera-and-radar tracking study by Li, Wu, Zhu and Lu, published by SAE International on March 31, 2022, describes a front-radar and smart-camera post-fusion system for tracking multiple vehicles. Its abstract identifies ACC and AEB as relevant applications and reports validation in a real highway scenario. That is an example of a system and test, not proof that every camera-radar combination improves every ADAS function.

What different sensors contribute

A survey titled “Multi-Sensor Fusion in Automated Driving” reviews radar, lidar, cameras, ultrasonic sensors, GPS, inertial measurement units (IMUs) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) inputs. These modalities supply different kinds of observations, so a system’s useful information depends on its sensor suite and the task at hand.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Camera: provides image-based observations. In a specific vision-radar tracking study, vision had higher azimuth accuracy than radar in that setup.
  • Radar: provides radar detections that can complement camera observations. In the same study, radar had higher range accuracy than vision in that setup.
  • Lidar and ultrasonic sensors: are among the modalities considered in the automated-driving survey; the cited survey record does not establish a universal performance ranking for them.
  • GPS, IMU and V2X: are also included in the survey’s coverage. Their inclusion does not by itself establish that a particular ADAS system uses them or how much they improve it.

The vision-versus-radar accuracy findings come from Wu, Ren, Wu and Shao’s SAE study, published April 3, 2018, “Study on Target Tracking Based on Vision and Radar Sensor Fusion.” Treat them as results for that study’s setup, not as a general rule that one modality is always more accurate in a given direction.

How fusion and data association affect the result

Sensor readings must be connected to the right objects before they can support a coherent track. A fusion system has to reconcile observations from different sensors and decide which detections refer to the same target. If it associates a detection with the wrong object—or fails to associate a valid detection—the resulting track can be less useful even when the sensors themselves provide good measurements.

The 2018 SAE vision-radar study specifically identifies data association and the design of the association gate as factors affecting tracking results. An association gate is the rule used to decide whether a new observation is plausible for an existing track. Its design can affect which detections are accepted as matches, so sensor accuracy alone is not enough to describe system performance.

Fusion can also happen at different stages. Li and colleagues’ 2022 example is described as post-fusion: it combines information from a front radar and smart camera for vehicle tracking. That example shows one approach, not a finding that post-fusion is best for every sensor suite or ADAS task. Comparisons need to identify the fusion design, association method and target scenario rather than treating “sensor fusion” as a single uniform technology.

What road-test results can—and cannot—show

Duan and colleagues’ SAE International study, “Experiment and Evaluation on Multi-Sensor Fusion Data of Car-Following Scenarios,” published December 30, 2020, reports average relative longitudinal tolerances for four road-test groups. The values describe that study’s car-following evaluation; the abstract details provided do not identify the groups further here, so they should not be assigned labels or interpreted as a ranking of sensor products.

Road-test group Average relative longitudinal distance tolerance Average relative longitudinal velocity tolerance
Group 1 0.99% (SAE International, 2020) 1.68% (SAE International, 2020)
Group 2 1.07% (SAE International, 2020) 1.99% (SAE International, 2020)
Group 3 0.99% (SAE International, 2020) 2.30% (SAE International, 2020)
Group 4 1.12% (SAE International, 2020) 2.66% (SAE International, 2020)

These are reported average tolerances for the study’s four car-following road-test groups, not universal production-vehicle accuracy figures. They do not establish performance for other targets, road conditions, sensor configurations or evaluation methods. A meaningful comparison needs the scenario and metric alongside the number.

Why more sensors do not guarantee uninterrupted assistance

Additional sensors can provide redundancy, but they do not ensure that an ADAS feature will keep working through every fault or degraded condition. A U.S. Department of Transportation study, “Safety Implications of Potential Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Sensor Degradation,” examined camera, radar and lidar data alongside ground-truth data. Its reported outcomes varied: depending on the type of degradation and the system’s redundancy, a feature could shut down, continue with degraded performance, or show no impact.

That range of outcomes makes degraded-input handling part of system performance, not an afterthought. A system comparison should ask whether the affected feature warns the driver, limits or shuts down its operation, or continues without an apparent effect under the tested degradation. The available report summary does not establish one outcome as typical for all vehicles or all sensor failures.

How to compare multi-sensor ADAS claims

When evaluating a claim that one sensor combination or fusion approach is better, check what was measured and under which conditions:

  • Sensor modalities and measurements: Identify which sensors are present and what each contributes in the system being evaluated. Do not turn one study’s camera-versus-radar accuracy result into a universal ranking.
  • Fusion and association design: Look for how sensor observations are combined and how detections are matched to tracks. The 2018 SAE study identifies association-gate design as relevant to tracking results.
  • Target and scenario: Distinguish car-following and vehicle-tracking results from performance on other targets or in other road situations. A highway validation or car-following test does not cover every ADAS use case.
  • Metric and test conditions: Check whether a result concerns distance, velocity, detection, tracking or another measure, and whether it is an average, a tolerance or a different statistic. Keep the test setting attached to the figure.
  • Degraded-sensor response: Check how the system behaves when an input is degraded, including whether redundancy helps preserve a feature or whether it shuts down or operates less effectively.

In its November 18, 2024, New Car Assessment Program final decision notice on ADAS, NHTSA summarized comments from stakeholders discussing sensor field of view, pedestrian scenarios, sensor combinations and false-positive/false-negative trade-offs. Those are commenters’ positions summarized in the notice, not an agency conclusion that one sensor stack is superior.
