No—not across computers. Photonic computing uses light for selected processing tasks, while photonic interconnects use light to move data between electronic chips. Current commercial examples show the latter being developed for AI infrastructure, not consumer computers that run without electricity.
What does “photonic computing” mean?
Photonic computing is an umbrella term for using light in computing-related work. It includes two distinct ideas: optical communication, where light carries data, and optical processing, where optical components perform selected operations. Neither means that a whole computer’s logic, memory, controls, and power have moved from electronics to light.
Conventional computers still rely on electronic chips and electrical signaling. A system can combine electronic and optical components, with signals converted between the two where needed. The label “optical computing” therefore describes a range of approaches, not one finished replacement computer. A September 29, 2026 article on DEV Community describes the field as early and experimental.
What is light doing in current commercial products?
The clearest commercial example in the available product information is Lightmatter’s Passage, a photonic interconnect platform aimed at AI infrastructure. Its purpose is to move data optically between components; that is different from replacing the electronic chips doing general-purpose computing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Lightmatter describes Passage as a “3D Photonic Interconnect Platform” and says it is available to early-access partners. These are company descriptions and availability claims, not evidence of broad deployment or a consumer product. Lightmatter’s Passage page lists these specifications:
| Platform or product | Vendor-stated specification | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Passage lanes | 56–448 Gbps per lane | Lane bandwidth listed on Lightmatter’s undated product page, accessed in 2026. |
| Passage EVK100 reference platform | Up to 3.2 Tbps per fiber at 1.9 pJ/bit | Bandwidth and energy-per-bit figures stated by Lightmatter for the reference platform. |
| Passage L20 CPX | 6.4 Tbps in a single socketed module | Lightmatter’s claim in its announcement dated September 17, 2026; the announcement does not independently validate the figure. |
| Passage L20 | 5 pJ/bit | Energy-per-bit specification on Lightmatter’s undated product page, accessed in 2026. |
These figures are vendor specifications, not independent benchmarks, and they refer to particular products or platforms rather than all photonic technology. Lightmatter positions Passage L20 for near-package and on-board optics in AI infrastructure. Its September 17, 2026 announcement says the L20 CPX combines bidirectional transmit and receive on one fiber; that statement alone does not establish broad deployment. The Passage L20 product page gives the 5 pJ/bit specification.

How is an optical link different from an optical computer?
Optical interconnect: moving information
An optical interconnect carries data using light through an optical path. The Passage examples are in this category. They address communication between computing components, rather than claiming that light replaces all electronic processing.
Optical processing: performing selected operations
A photonic compute engine uses optical components for certain operations. That is a different use of light from carrying data over a link. The available product evidence here is strongest for interconnects; it does not establish that general-purpose computing has shifted to optical processors.

Does this mean electricity is disappearing from computers?
No. The evidence describes optical paths and selected light-based functions alongside electronics. It does not show that computers no longer need electrical chips, memory, control systems, or electrical power. “Replacing electricity” is a dramatic shorthand for a narrower development: using light for particular tasks, especially data movement.
A DEV Community article dated September 29, 2026 cites large comparisons between improvements in computing and data movement, attributing them to IBM researchers, but does not identify the underlying IBM publication. Those numbers cannot be treated as verified statistics without an identifiable source.
