Start Equine Phantoms at Pinastri’s Hermitage in Toussaint, northeast of Dun Tynne Crossroads. Search the hut and its surroundings, then drink Pinastri’s graytop brew to see the specter and speak with Roach. Once you drink it, stay with the quest: leaving the area or abandoning the sequence can fail it. The final choice is whether to let Roach forgive the knight or fight him for an Umbra trophy.
Where to start Equine Phantoms
Find Pinastri at her hermitage northeast of Dun Tynne Crossroads in Toussaint. She says an invisible specter is tormenting her and asks Geralt for help. The quest is listed for level 44, but that is a guide recommendation, not a mandatory level gate. The investigation eventually leads to Mont Crane Cemetery.
Pinastri offers potatoes rather than coin. You can accept, help without payment, or haggle. If you haggle and then agree to help for free, that also counts toward the “Proof of Generosity” condition in There Can Be Only One.
How to investigate the haunting
Search the hut and the area outside
Use Witcher Senses to look for clues inside and around the hut. The relevant signs include dead moths outside, a note and graytop on the table, and a bloodied pillow. Follow the blood trail through the small window until it ends; Geralt’s medallion then detects magic. Depending on the order in which you inspect things, the note may be optional.

Drink the graytop brew only when ready to continue
Speak with Pinastri again after examining the clues. When you drink the common graytop brew, Geralt can perceive the specter and talk with Roach. This commits you to the next part of the sequence: leaving the area or abandoning the quest after drinking can cause it to fail, so finish the investigation before moving on.
Follow Roach to Mont Crane Cemetery
Help Roach examine the area, then mount up and chase the umbra. The pursuit is scripted to lead to Mont Crane Cemetery; it is not a chance to catch the creature. At the cemetery, defeat four panther apparitions and examine the grave. The knight’s spirit explains that he killed his horse in anger and remains because Pinastri has not forgiven him.

Choice and outcomes: forgive the knight or fight
This decision trades a lasting resolution for optional loot. The forgiving route ends the haunting; refusing forgiveness starts a fight and awards the Umbra trophy, but leaves Pinastri at risk.
| Choice | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Ask Roach to forgive the knight on the murdered horse’s behalf | The knight’s spirit leaves for good. This is the route that resolves the haunting. |
| Refuse forgiveness and fight the knight | Defeating him lets Geralt loot the Umbra trophy. Pinastri still refuses to forgive him, and the specter can return later and kill her. |
Rewards and quest completion
Return to Pinastri after the cemetery sequence. The walkthrough lists 150 XP for completion and up to 60 potatoes, with the potatoes depending on the payment agreement made earlier. The Umbra trophy is separate: it is tied to fighting the knight, not to the forgiving resolution.
