Yes, a microcontroller can use software-controlled GPIO to generate or sample a pulse-density modulation (PDM) bitstream, but bit-banging makes the CPU responsible for meeting the signal’s timing. Whether it is practical depends on the MCU, required bit clock and timing tolerance, and what else the processor must do. For microphone input, capturing the raw stream is only part of the task: it must also be filtered and decimated to produce PCM audio.

What “bit-banging PDM” means

Bit-banging replaces a dedicated peripheral with software that changes or reads a GPIO pin at controlled intervals. For PDM output, software generates a sequence of bits whose density represents a target value or audio signal. For microphone capture, software samples a PDM data stream, usually in step with a clock. Those are different jobs: generating a stream does not amount to capturing and decoding one.

Because software drives the GPIO activity, it must keep to the required timing while handling any other work. General bit-banging guidance warns that processor load can introduce jitter or glitches when tasks compete for CPU time (bit-banging overview). The actual limits depend on the target MCU and implementation; the available documentation does not establish a universally achievable PDM frequency or a tested GPIO transmitter for a particular MCU.

Can you generate PDM with GPIO?

In principle, yes: a GPIO can carry the output bitstream if software can produce the required sequence at sufficiently regular intervals. But feasibility is not the same as a portable recipe. You need to define the bit clock, allowable timing variation, interrupt policy, and concurrent workload for the specific MCU. The sources available here do not validate a bit-banged transmitter implementation, so there is no defensible one-size-fits-all clock setting, code sample, or register configuration to provide.

Before writing a GPIO loop, check whether the MCU offers a PDM peripheral, a timer output, DMA, or programmable I/O that can handle the timing more predictably. Hardware can reduce CPU servicing demands, although capabilities vary by device. If GPIO remains the only viable path, consult the exact MCU reference manual and verify the output waveform with an oscilloscope or logic analyzer under the workload the product will actually run.

What microphone capture requires

A PDM microphone typically produces a bitstream for capture; it does not directly provide ordinary PCM samples. A capture path needs a suitable sampling clock and a decimation/filtering stage to convert the high-rate PDM stream to a lower-rate PCM stream. The signal direction matters: software decoding examples for microphone input are not evidence that GPIO-based PDM output has been implemented or tested.

Hardware peripherals can combine several of these tasks. Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF5340 PDM module generates a clock, samples input, filters and downsamples the stream to 16-bit PCM, and transfers results to RAM using EasyDMA. Its specification offers a selectable PDM clock-to-output-sample ratio of 64 or 80; its examples also show requested and actual clock rates that can differ because of divider rounding. These are nRF5340-specific peripheral details, not universal settings for bit-banged PDM (Nordic nRF5340 Product Specification: PDM).

Nordic also advises discarding the first few output samples after starting that peripheral because filter startup or microphone transients may make them invalid. The specification describes the count as typically around 50 for the nRF5340 module; this is not a general rule for other devices or software filters (Nordic nRF5340 Product Specification, linked above).

Software decoding is a separate option

Software can also handle the capture-side conversion. STMicroelectronics’ AN3998, published in October 2011, describes optimized PDM decoding and reconstruction to 16-bit PCM for STM32 setups. It is a software-decoding reference, not proof of a GPIO PDM transmitter technique (STMicroelectronics AN3998).

How the implementation options compare

Approach Timing and CPU implications Typical role and limits
Software-controlled GPIO Software must create or sample the timed GPIO sequence, consuming CPU time and potentially suffering jitter or glitches under competing load, as described by the general bit-banging overview. Can use general-purpose pins when dedicated hardware is unavailable. Achievable rates and reliability depend on the MCU and workload; no universal figure is established.
Dedicated PDM peripheral Peripheral clocking and acquisition can reduce real-time software servicing. On the nRF5340, the documented clock generator does not add jitter to the selected HFCLK source; this is a device-specific statement, not a direct benchmark against GPIO. Can support microphone capture, filtering, decimation, and buffered transfer. Exact functions and settings are platform-specific.
Software PDM decoding Software performs the capture-side decoding and reconstruction; the cited ST application note describes an optimized implementation but does not establish a GPIO output method. An option for converting captured PDM to PCM in supported STM32 contexts. It is not interchangeable with generating a PDM output stream.

What vendor examples show

Infineon’s PSoC 6 example illustrates a hardware-supported audio path rather than bit-banging: it captures a short microphone sample through the PDM/PCM block, stores the recording in internal SRAM, and uses I2S to play it through an external audio codec. The documented setup calls for ModusToolbox v3.0 or later, a PSoC 6 BSP version 4.0.0 or later, and C. Its listed toolchains include GNU Arm Embedded Compiler 10.3.1, Arm Compiler 6.16, and IAR C/C++ Compiler 9.30.1. These are requirements for following that example, not prerequisites for generic PDM or GPIO work (Infineon PSoC 6 PDM-to-I2S example).

The example names compatible PSoC 6 development kits and mentions a Pmod I2S2 alternative for a particular prototyping-kit setup. Those are optional physical platforms for reproducing its architecture, not requirements for the general technique. Silicon Labs’ API example likewise uses peripheral-based microphone capture: it configures clocks and GPIO routing, initializes the PDM peripheral, and reads PCM samples from its receive path (Silicon Labs PDM API example).

A practical decision path

  1. Decide the signal direction. For an output, determine the target value or audio signal and the required PDM bit clock. For a microphone, identify the microphone’s clock and data requirements and the PCM format needed downstream.
  2. Inspect the exact MCU. Check its reference manual and SDK for a PDM peripheral, timer output, DMA, or programmable I/O. Confirm what the block actually does: clocking, capture, filtering, decimation, and buffering are distinct capabilities.
  3. Set timing and workload requirements. If using GPIO, define acceptable timing variation and decide how interrupts and other CPU work will be controlled. Do not assume a clock rate or interrupt strategy from another MCU.
  4. Implement and verify on the target. Check the waveform with a logic analyzer or oscilloscope, including while the device runs its expected concurrent workload. For microphone capture, also validate the decoded PCM output rather than treating a valid-looking bitstream as proof of correct audio.
