For SAS teams, innovation and continuity are not either-or goals: they need access to newer capabilities without putting validated workloads at risk. SAS publishes support windows for specific releases and describes a path from SAS 9 toward Viya, but neither amounts to a promise that every old project, operating system, or third-party dependency will remain compatible indefinitely. The practical question is whether your exact stack and workflow are supported.
What SAS support means for SAS 9 customers
SAS lists SAS 9.4M9 as generally available in June 2025, with standard support through July 1, 2030. The same support page lists SAS 9.4M8 through February 1, 2028. These are release-specific dates, not a single end-of-support date for every SAS 9 product or deployment. Check the current SAS 9.4 and earlier releases support listing for the release you use and any product-specific terms.
Support is also different from an assurance that no changes will be needed. SAS recommends keeping current with releases, maintenance releases, and security hot fixes. It also notes that applying some fixes may be impractical or impossible when compatibility risks or unwanted side effects are involved. Teams should therefore weigh security and maintenance needs against the possibility of disruption, then validate changes in their own environment.
Backward compatibility depends on the whole stack
A SAS application sits alongside operating systems and other third-party products, each with its own versions and support conditions. SAS’s third-party software policy describes support for one or more baseline major versions and subsequent minor updates. Major-version changes may need separate evaluation, and exceptions can apply. That is a scoped support policy—not blanket compatibility across all third-party versions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Before treating a workload as covered, identify its SAS release, operating system, third-party dependencies, and relevant interfaces, then confirm support for those exact versions in the applicable product documentation. A project opening successfully is not, by itself, proof that every dependency or workflow is supported.
Can you keep SAS 9 workflows while moving toward Viya?
SAS presents Viya as the principal home for new innovation while continuing to invest in SAS 9 and describing customers as transitioning over time. Chris Hemedinger, SAS director of user engagement, says Viya has monthly releases and is where most new innovation takes place. That is SAS’s description of its product strategy, not an independent comparison of features or a guarantee that a particular SAS 9 capability has an equivalent in Viya.

Enterprise Guide as a connection point
SAS says Enterprise Guide 8.4 can connect to SAS Viya 4. This can let a team use a familiar client as a bridge for projects and code workflows while adopting Viya. The connection does not establish that every older Enterprise Guide project will work unchanged, or that all features are available in every configuration. Check current Enterprise Guide and Viya documentation for the exact release, feature, and connection requirements.
What the bridge does—and does not—settle
A supported client connection is one part of a transition, not a complete workload-compatibility or migration-cost assessment. Project behavior can depend on code, data sources, libraries, permissions, scheduled jobs, and other environment-specific factors. Preserve working copies and test representative workflows in the target environment before changing production processes.

Choose between staying, upgrading, and transitioning
| Path | What to establish | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on the current SAS 9 release | Its specific standard or limited support window, plus support for the operating system and dependencies in use. | Remaining on a familiar release can avoid immediate migration work, but does not remove the need to manage fixes, security, and end-of-support planning. |
| Upgrade within SAS 9 | The target maintenance release’s support terms and compatibility with the rest of the stack. | Maintenance and security updates matter, but test the changes against real workloads because fixes can carry compatibility risks or side effects. |
| Transition toward Viya | Target Viya release requirements, the supported client connection, and the behavior of each workload being moved. | Viya is where SAS says most new innovation takes place; the transition still requires workload-specific assessment, testing, and migration planning. |
The available support and connectivity information does not establish a universal migration cost or a workload-by-workload conversion matrix. Base a decision on your environment and a tested plan, rather than assuming that all projects will transfer unchanged.

A practical compatibility checklist
- Inventory the environment. Record the SAS release and maintenance level, operating system, third-party products and versions, interfaces, and the projects and jobs that matter operationally.
- Verify support for the exact stack. Use current SAS release and product documentation to confirm applicable support windows, dependency versions, and any exceptions.
- Protect working projects. Back up code, project files, configuration, and relevant data before applying updates or testing a transition.
- Test representative workflows. Include critical and commonly used jobs, connections, and outputs in a non-production environment; compare results and investigate failures before rollout.
- Plan the change by workload. Decide which systems can remain on SAS 9, which should move within SAS 9, and which are candidates for Viya. Track unresolved dependencies and assign validation before changing production.
