Imagination Technologies designs graphics processor technology and licenses it to chipmakers; it is not currently established as a seller of retail graphics cards. Its strategy is to position GPUs as shared engines for graphics, compute, and edge AI, particularly in power-constrained devices and automotive systems. That is a meaningful shift in emphasis—but announcements and demonstrations do not, by themselves, prove broad adoption or a completed comeback.
What Imagination Technologies actually makes
Imagination develops semiconductor intellectual property (IP), including GPU designs, and licenses that technology to companies that build chips. Those partners integrate the licensed IP into their own system-on-chips (SoCs), which then go into products. Imagination says its licensed silicon ships in cars, phones, wearables, and PCs; a user may therefore encounter PowerVR technology inside a product without seeing an Imagination-branded graphics card for sale. Imagination’s website and company overview describe its business and markets.
This distinction also shapes how to interpret announcements: a license or chip integration is evidence of a customer relationship or design use, not necessarily proof that a particular consumer product has launched.
What is changing in its GPU strategy?
Imagination’s current public positioning puts graphics alongside edge AI and compute. Its pitch is that a GPU can handle rendering as well as certain compute and AI tasks on devices where power and integration matter. The company cites interfaces including Vulkan and OpenCL. These are descriptions of its intended capabilities, not independent benchmarks or evidence that GPUs have replaced CPUs or dedicated neural-processing units in shipping products.

On 8 May 2025, Imagination announced E-Series, a new generation intended to bring graphics and on-device AI together. In September 2026, its newsroom described performance data and demonstrations as supporting a “GPU-first strategy”: one processor and software stack addressing graphics, compute, and AI. Those are company claims about its direction and demonstrations. No comparable independent benchmark against Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, or Arm Mali products is established here, so the strategy should not be confused with proof of performance leadership. Why automotive is a notable market
Automotive is the clearest recent named partnership example. On 10 March 2025, Imagination announced that its GPU IP powers Renesas R-Car Gen 5 SoCs, describing the technology as automotive-grade. This is an IP integration announcement; it does not identify a specific vehicle model or establish that a vehicle using the chip is already on sale. Imagination newsroom

In a January 2025 interview with Jon Peddie Research, Jake Kochnowicz, then Imagination’s chief revenue officer, called automotive “definitely still the strong one for us” and said the company continued to see traction there. He also described automakers’ interest in differentiated designs rather than dependence on a single supplier’s platform. Is PowerVR still used?
Imagination continues to present GPU IP as part of its business, but the announcements cited here do not establish how widely particular PowerVR designs are used across current retail devices. Two dated examples show what licensing can look like:

- Renesas R-Car Gen 5: In March 2025, Imagination named its GPU IP in Renesas automotive SoCs.
- StarFive VisionFive 2: Imagination’s August 2022 newsroom archive says StarFive selected its GPU for this RISC-V single-board computer. The example illustrates third-party integration; its current retail availability is not established here.

Does Imagination make desktop graphics cards?
There is evidence of renewed interest in larger-scale graphics, but not a confirmed mass-market card launch. Tom’s Hardware reported in March 2026 that Imagination was working with graphics-card and SoC design companies on desktop, workstation, and cloud graphics, and had shown DirectX 11 workloads. This indicates ambition and technical demonstrations—not retail availability, independent performance parity, or a return to selling consumer cards under the Imagination name. Tom’s Hardware report

That distinction matters because the company’s historical association with PowerVR graphics, including the Dreamcast era, does not make its present licensing model equivalent to a conventional GPU vendor that sells complete graphics cards.

Imagination announced Markus Mosen as CEO, effective immediately, on 9 February 2026. Executive chairman Ray Bingham said the board was committed to growing the company into a defining semiconductor IP provider for graphics and AI at the edge, and that this began with having the right leadership. Mosen said it was a privilege to join the company at that moment. Those statements frame the board’s ambition; they are not evidence that the strategy has already succeeded. Imagination newsroom

The company has narrowed its public emphasis before. The January 2025 Jon Peddie Research interview reported that Imagination ended development of its RISC-V CPU effort in 2024 to focus on GPUs and AI. That dated shift helps explain the current narrative, but it does not establish that every CPU-related activity or customer commitment ended. Jon Peddie Research interview
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Imagination’s current story is best understood as a strategy to license GPU IP into more kinds of systems, not as a verified return to the retail graphics-card market. The evidence includes company positioning, named IP integrations, and demonstrations. It does not establish neutral market-share figures, independently comparable performance rankings, or a current mass-market graphics-card launch.
Financial context also needs a date. Fortress announced a $100 million convertible term loan investment in Imagination on 24 July 2024 to support continued technology and IP development. That announcement alone does not establish the company’s present ultimate ownership, financial position, or whether the loan has since been repaid or converted. Fortress announcement
