Oracle groups SQL statements into six categories: data definition language (DDL), data manipulation language (DML), transaction control, session control, system control, and embedded SQL. The important wrinkle is that Oracle classifies SELECT as DML, even though it reads data rather than changing data stored in the database. DDL also has a different transaction effect: Oracle Database 26 says it implicitly commits the current transaction before and after each DDL statement.

Oracle’s six SQL statement categories

Oracle’s Database 26 Concepts overview groups SQL by what a statement does or where it operates. The Oracle Database 19c SQL Language Reference lists representative statements in each category. The examples below are representative, not an exhaustive list for every Oracle release.

Category What it does Representative Oracle statements
DDL (Data Definition Language) Creates, changes, or removes schema objects and manages related privileges and roles. CREATE, ALTER, DROP, GRANT, REVOKE, TRUNCATE
DML (Data Manipulation Language) Queries or manipulates data in existing schema objects. SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, MERGE, CALL, EXPLAIN PLAN, LOCK TABLE
Transaction control Sets transaction properties or commits, rolls back, or marks transaction work. COMMIT, ROLLBACK, SAVEPOINT, SET TRANSACTION, SET CONSTRAINT
Session control Changes properties of the current user session. ALTER SESSION, SET ROLE
System control Changes properties of the database instance. ALTER SYSTEM
Embedded SQL Places SQL statements inside a procedural-language program. Embedded DDL, DML, and transaction-control statements

Is SELECT DML in Oracle?

Yes. Oracle’s SQL Language Reference places SELECT in DML and calls it a “limited form of DML.” A query can access data and manipulate the data it accesses before returning results, but SELECT does not change data stored in the database.

Some teaching materials use “DQL” (Data Query Language) as a separate label for queries. That is an alternate instructional convention, not a separate category in Oracle’s six-part classification. For Oracle terminology, treat SELECT as DML.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why DDL’s transaction behavior matters

DDL is not interchangeable with DML when you have uncommitted work. Oracle Database’s 26 SQL Language Reference, Chapter 10, “Types of SQL Statements”, states: “The database implicitly commits the current transaction before and after every DDL statement.” In contrast, Oracle Database 19c’s SQL Language Reference says DML statements do not implicitly commit the current transaction.

This means a DDL statement can commit earlier work in the transaction as well as its own schema change; a later rollback cannot undo that prior work. If your application depends on precise transaction behavior, use the SQL Language Reference for the database release you run.

What transaction-control statements do

A transaction is a sequence of statements the database treats as one unit. Oracle’s Database 21c Development Guide describes transactions and their controls:

  • COMMIT ends the transaction and makes its changes permanent.
  • ROLLBACK undoes all or part of the transaction’s work.
  • SAVEPOINT marks a point to which you can later roll back without undoing all work since the transaction began.
  • SET TRANSACTION and SET CONSTRAINT are also listed as transaction-control statements in the Oracle 19c reference.

Example: group related DML

Suppose a manager leaves and you need to record the departure in JOB_HISTORY and update the affected employees’ MANAGER_ID values. Treat the related inserts and updates as one transaction: commit when all required changes succeed, or roll back if the operation must be abandoned. A savepoint can provide a partial rollback point within that work.

Session control versus system control

The scope distinguishes these categories. ALTER SESSION and SET ROLE affect the current session; ALTER SYSTEM affects database-instance properties. Thus, session control changes the context of one connection, while system control applies at the instance level. Oracle identifies ALTER SYSTEM as its system-control statement in the cited references.

Embedded SQL and PL/SQL boundaries

Embedded SQL means SQL statements incorporated into a procedural-language program; it describes how SQL is used, rather than a new kind of operation alongside creating objects or changing data. Oracle’s SQL Language Reference also gives support boundaries: the cited 19c documentation says session-control statements and ALTER SYSTEM are not supported in PL/SQL, while transaction-control support has exceptions for certain forms of COMMIT and ROLLBACK. DDL can be supported in PL/SQL through DBMS_SQL. These details are release- and statement-specific, so check the documentation matching your database version before relying on them.

SQL classification is not the same as OCI processing

Oracle’s SQL reference classifies statements by language function. Oracle Call Interface (OCI) documentation describes categories for client processing: DDL, control statements (transaction, session, and system), queries, DML, PL/SQL, and embedded SQL. It says OCI applications process transaction, session, and system control statements as if they were DML. That is an OCI handling convention; it does not replace Oracle’s SQL-language taxonomy.
