Pin to taskbar adds an app shortcut to the Windows taskbar so you can open it quickly. It does not mean the app is running. To pin an app, find it in Search and choose Pin to taskbar, or right-click its open taskbar icon and choose the same command. To remove the shortcut, choose Unpin from taskbar.
What pinning an app does
The taskbar is the strip on the Windows desktop used to launch apps and switch between open windows. Microsoft describes pinning as a way to keep an app available there for quick access. A pinned icon can remain on the taskbar whether or not the app is open; Windows indicates that an app is running separately, with an indicator beneath its icon.
Unpinning removes the shortcut from the taskbar. It does not uninstall the app.
How to pin or unpin an app in Windows 11
Pin an app from Search
- Open taskbar Search and type the app’s name.
- Right-click the app in the search results and select Pin to taskbar.
Pin an app that is already open
- Right-click the app’s icon on the taskbar.
- Select Pin to taskbar.
Unpin an app
- Right-click the app’s taskbar icon.
- Select Unpin from taskbar.

Keyboard and screen-reader options
Microsoft’s accessibility instructions describe keyboard routes for these commands. From Start, navigate to the app, press Shift+F10 to open its context menu, and select Pin to taskbar. To unpin an app, press Windows key+T to navigate to taskbar apps, open the selected app’s context menu, and choose Unpin from taskbar. The exact navigation depends on the Start menu section and Windows version. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts guidance.
Can you pin a website to the taskbar?
For a website in Microsoft Edge, you can install it as an app and then pin that app to the taskbar. In Edge, open the website, use the browser’s install option for the site, and then open edge://apps. On the site’s app card, choose Pin to taskbar. The installed site opens in its own app window rather than as an ordinary browser tab. Microsoft notes that installing a site as an app is distinct from a progressive web app (PWA), which can provide additional capabilities. Windows 10 support status
Microsoft’s taskbar customization guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10, though individual menus can differ. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after that date Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
