A reusable overlay hook can make sense when several parts of a React app repeat the same interaction behavior—but a one-off modal may need only local state. Senthil Kumar’s case for useOverlay is to share behavior such as opening, closing, and dismissal while leaving markup, styling, and layout to the application. That is a design rationale, not a guarantee about the hook’s current API or accessibility support.
Why overlay behavior becomes repetitive
“Overlay” can describe many different interfaces: modal and confirmation dialogs, drawers, side panels, bottom sheets, popovers, contextual menus, full-screen layers, and command palettes. Their appearance and purpose vary, but their interaction code can overlap.
Across those components, developers may repeatedly manage visibility, outside interaction, Escape-key handling, portals, and document event listeners. Reimplementing similar behavior in each component can create duplicated logic; combining every concern into one general-purpose component can make it harder to preserve a product’s individual design.
In his DEV Community article, Senthil Kumar presents useOverlay as part of useThisHook, an open-source collection of reusable React hooks. His proposed boundary is to reuse interaction behavior without requiring a particular visual treatment. He summarizes the principle as: “Separate overlay behavior from overlay presentation.” Source: Senthil Kumar, DEV Community

What the proposed abstraction owns—and what it does not
Behavior the hook is meant to centralize
The article describes a simple controller concept with open(), close(), and toggle() operations. A shared behavior layer could keep recurring visibility and interaction logic in one place, while each caller decides when and how to use it.
Presentation the application retains
The consuming application remains responsible for the overlay’s markup, styles, layout, and visual treatment. A confirmation dialog can look distinct from a side panel even if both follow a shared approach to opening and dismissal. Keeping that boundary clear also helps a hook avoid becoming a container for unrelated styling, positioning, animation, routing, analytics, or business rules.

useOverlay vs. useState: when is a hook worthwhile?
For one uncomplicated modal, useState(false) can be entirely adequate. An abstraction is not automatically better just because several overlay examples exist in a codebase. The useful question is whether the same interaction behavior recurs enough that sharing it reduces repetition without making ownership less clear.

- Prefer local state when an overlay is isolated and its behavior is simple enough to understand directly in the component.
- Consider a small behavior hook when several overlays repeat the same control logic and your team wants to centralize that behavior while keeping each interface’s presentation local.
- Consider a fuller overlay or dialog library when the application needs established interaction patterns—particularly focus handling, keyboard navigation, or nested overlays—that would otherwise require substantial implementation and maintenance.
These are decision criteria, not measured results. Kumar’s article does not quantify code savings, defect reduction, development time, performance, adoption, or compatibility.
Visibility state is not the whole accessibility job
Opening and closing an overlay is only one part of making it usable. Depending on the interface, developers must also consider keyboard navigation, focus management and restoration, Escape behavior, screen-reader semantics, background interaction, nested overlays, and appropriate dismissal. A controller that tracks visibility alone does not establish that those responsibilities are handled.

The article raises these accessibility and interaction concerns but does not demonstrate that useOverlay implements them. Do not treat the hook’s name or its open/close operations as evidence of ARIA semantics, focus trapping, focus restoration, or complete keyboard support. Inspect the current implementation and test the resulting component against its requirements.
How to choose among local state, a hook, and a library
| Approach | Best fit | Presentation control | Interaction and accessibility ownership | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local state | A single, simple overlay with little repeated behavior | Application component | Application component | Direct and easy to follow, but repeated interaction logic may spread across components. |
| Small behavior hook | Repeated overlay behavior with a deliberate boundary between behavior and presentation | Application component | Depends on the hook and the application; verify what is actually implemented. | Can reduce duplication, but an abstraction that owns too much can obscure behavior and constrain callers. |
| Full overlay or modal library | More involved interaction needs or a team that wants a broader, established primitive | Depends on the library and integration | Depends on the library’s documented support and the application’s implementation | May cover more interaction concerns, but requires integration with the existing design system and its conventions. |
Kumar’s article mentions React Aria’s useOverlay in connection with outside interaction and Escape dismissal, and Primer’s implementation in connection with focus-related behavior such as restoration. Those are the article’s comparisons, not independently verified descriptions of current releases. Consult the projects’ current official documentation before making a product-level decision; names alone do not establish that two hooks offer equivalent scope.

What to verify before adopting this useOverlay
The article explains why its author wanted a reusable abstraction, but the current API and implementation were not verified. Before adding it to an application, check the project documentation and repository for the specific behavior you need, including:
- The actual hook signature, return values, and supported React versions.
- Whether outside interaction and Escape dismissal are implemented, and how callers can configure or prevent them.
- How focus is moved into an overlay and restored when it closes, if those behaviors are required.
- Whether nested overlays, portals, background interaction, and screen-reader semantics are addressed.
- The project’s release and maintenance state, along with whether its assumptions fit your application.
Until those details are checked, treat open(), close(), and toggle() as the article’s description of a simple controller surface—not as a confirmed current API.
The practical design test
A useful overlay abstraction gives repeated behavior a clear home without taking control away from the interface that uses it. If a hook makes the repeated part simpler and leaves callers able to express their own presentation, it may be a good fit. If the overlay is one-off, or the shared layer hides important interaction and accessibility decisions, local state or a more complete, documented primitive may be the clearer choice.
