NVIDIA OpenShell is an open-source runtime control layer that puts policy-enforced boundaries around AI agents as they use files, processes, network connections, APIs, and model providers. It runs beneath an agent framework or harness rather than replacing one. Its purpose is to limit what an agent can do and give operators a place to review access—not to guarantee that the model is truthful, correct, or harmless.

What is NVIDIA OpenShell?

OpenShell is software for running AI agents inside managed sandboxes. NVIDIA positions it below agent frameworks: the framework or harness supplies the agent workflow, while OpenShell coordinates its execution environment and enforces access policy around it. It is not itself an agent framework.

The distinction matters because a prompt and a runtime boundary do different jobs. Instructions and model safeguards may influence what an agent tries to do. Runtime controls determine which actions are allowed to reach the host, network, credentials, or services. OpenShell is intended to narrow the actions available to an agent, including when its behavior is unexpected.

It is one part of NVIDIA’s broader Open Agent Safety Platform. NVIDIA reports that more than 100 organizations were using the platform at launch; this is a company-reported adoption figure described by the Associated Press in the context of that wider launch, not an independently audited count of OpenShell deployments.

How does OpenShell work?

OpenShell separates control and enforcement responsibilities across a gateway, a supervisor, a sandbox, and a compute runtime. The agent runs inside the sandbox. The sandbox can report attempted actions, but it does not decide whether those actions are permitted.

Component Role
Gateway Control plane for sandbox lifecycle, user authorization, settings, policy, providers, and access coordination.
Supervisor Trusted-side intermediary that checks requests, handles credentials and approved connections, and maintains communication with the gateway.
Sandbox Isolated environment in which the agent workload runs and from which attempted actions are reported.
Compute runtime Provisions the workload and supervisor, protected communication channel, and isolation boundary.

Enforcement happens at more than one point. During execution, kernel controls govern file access and system calls, while a mediated connection path applies network policy. Separately, before a proposed policy change is approved, a policy prover checks for newly introduced risky access—for example, a new credentialed host or API method. NVIDIA says detected findings can hold a change for human review.

What happens when an agent requests access?

  1. The agent attempts an action from inside its sandbox, such as reaching a host or using an API method.
  2. The request is checked against the applicable policy. Network destinations not listed in policy are denied by default.
  3. If the request is not allowed, the operator can review a surfaced proposal and decide whether to change policy. NVIDIA’s first-agent tutorial demonstrates applying an approved network rule while the sandbox is running.

That process makes policy review a security decision, not a routine way to dismiss prompts. Allowing a new destination or credentialed API path can create a route for workspace data, secrets, or conversation history to leave the environment.

What can OpenShell policies control?

NVIDIA documents controls for filesystem access, processes, network destinations, API requests, and provider credentials. The controls are not all equally changeable after a sandbox starts:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control area What it governs When it can change
Filesystem Which files or locations the workload may access. Fixed when the sandbox is created.
Processes Which process activity is permitted. Fixed when the sandbox is created.
Network Which destinations the workload may reach; unlisted destinations are denied by default. Can be updated while the sandbox runs.
Provider credentials Access to credentials used with approved providers and services. Can be updated while the sandbox runs.
API requests Which API hosts or methods are allowed under policy. Subject to policy and review; NVIDIA’s documentation describes checking proposed changes for risky access.

For deployment, define the smallest practical set of files, processes, destinations, API methods, and credentials that lets the agent complete its task. Broad network permissions or loosely scoped credentials can undermine the value of isolation. Rules that are too restrictive, however, can block useful work and create pressure to approve access without sufficient review.

Is OpenShell different from Docker?

Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, and virtual machines are compute substrates: they provide places and mechanisms to run workloads. OpenShell can use such infrastructure and adds controls designed around agent activity, including gateway coordination, sandbox supervision, policy-enforced egress, credential handling, inference routing, and logs.

Question Compute substrate OpenShell layer
Primary role Runs or isolates workloads. Coordinates agent sandboxes and applies agent-oriented access policy.
Agent-specific policy and review Depends on the substrate and how the operator configures it. Includes policy for files, processes, network, API requests, and provider credentials, plus review of proposed policy changes.
Credential mediation Depends on the deployment design. NVIDIA documents handling credentials through providers rather than handing provider credentials directly to the agent.

This is not an either-or choice: OpenShell relies on compute infrastructure. Evaluate the underlying deployment environment first, then ask whether OpenShell’s added policy and credential controls address the risks of the specific agent tasks you plan to run.

Can I use my existing agents and models?

NVIDIA lists Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, OpenClaw, and GitHub Copilot CLI among its supported agent examples, and also documents paths for custom agents and images. These are stated support examples, not a promise that every version, extension, or workflow works without configuration. Agent images, provider profiles, and policies need to match the task.

OpenShell does not require one particular model provider. NVIDIA’s first-agent tutorial illustrates configuration with OpenCode and OpenRouter; that is an example, not a requirement. The key security point is that the agent does not receive provider credentials directly. OpenShell documents using providers and policy-bound requests to approved endpoints to mediate that access.

Does OpenShell require BlueField-4?

No. NVIDIA says OpenShell can run on supported local and server infrastructure without BlueField-4. NVIDIA’s broader platform also describes Sentry, a separate monitoring and enforcement layer associated with BlueField hardware. Sentry is an additional layer for systems with that hardware, not a prerequisite for OpenShell.

What should I check before deploying it?

Confirm host and deployment support

Compatibility changes over time, so check NVIDIA’s current support matrix before choosing a host or rollout plan. The support-matrix version identified in the source material is v0.1.2; it lists Debian and Ubuntu Linux on x86_64 and arm64, and macOS on Apple Silicon, as supported host platforms. Windows with WSL 2 and Docker Desktop is marked experimental there. NVIDIA also documents Kubernetes deployment and multiple compute drivers. Do not assume these version-specific details remain current.

Match the policy to the task

  • Decide which workspace files and processes the agent actually needs before creating its sandbox.
  • Keep outbound network destinations narrow, and review each proposed addition for the possibility of data or secrets leaving the environment.
  • Limit API methods and provider access to those the workflow requires.
  • Review policy-prover findings before approving a change, especially when it introduces a credentialed host or new API method.
  • Test that the restrictions still permit the intended task; least privilege is useful only if operators do not routinely bypass it to make the workflow function.

Plan for log retention

NVIDIA documents log access through the CLI and TUI, direct log files, and OCSF JSON export. The gateway’s log buffer is bounded and is lost when the gateway restarts, so it should not be treated as durable retention. Use log files or ship OCSF JSON records to an external aggregator if records need to persist beyond a gateway restart.

What OpenShell does not guarantee

OpenShell constrains permitted actions; it does not make an underlying model honest or ensure that its decisions are correct. It can reduce the range of actions available to a misbehaving agent and give operators a reviewable control layer, but it should not be described as eliminating agent risk or preventing every breach.

Operators remain responsible for defining, reviewing, and maintaining policy. A narrow policy can interfere with useful work, while an overly broad one can expose data and credentials to unnecessary destinations. The right balance depends on the task and should be evaluated with the actual agent, image, provider profile, and deployment environment—not inferred from the presence of a sandbox alone.
