If your Samsung Galaxy screen stays on against your cheek during a call, or stays dark after you move the phone away, an accessory or obstruction may be interfering with the proximity sensor. First test a regular earpiece call with the case and screen protector removed, then gently clean the phone’s upper front. The same symptoms can have other causes, so work through the checks below before assuming the sensor is broken.
What the proximity sensor does during a call
During a regular call, the display should turn off when you hold the phone near your ear, helping prevent accidental touches, and turn back on when you move it away. Samsung describes this as the natural response of the proximity sensor. Samsung UK Support explains the sensor’s call behavior.
The sensor is generally near the top/front of the phone, but its exact position varies by Galaxy model. On some designs it is beneath the display, and foldable phones can have different layouts for the main and cover screens. Do not rely on finding one visible dot: a faint blinking pixel can also be normal sensor activity on some phones. Samsung’s sensor guidance and Samsung’s display-dimming guidance describe these variations.
Check the symptom under the right conditions
Recreate the problem during a regular call using the phone’s earpiece. Samsung says proximity behavior is deactivated during speakerphone or Bluetooth-earphone calls in its cited guidance, so those modes are not a reliable test. See Samsung UK’s call-mode guidance.

- During an earpiece call, move the phone close to your ear: the display should turn off.
- Move it away from your face: the display should wake again.
- Note which part fails. A screen that does not turn off and one that does not wake are different symptoms, and Samsung’s suggested motion-setting check specifically addresses the latter.
Remove anything that could cover the sensor
End the call, then temporarily remove the case, screen protector, protective film, stickers, or other coverings. Samsung identifies third-party films, glass protectors, stickers, and cases as possible sources of obstruction or interference. Test the phone without them before replacing an accessory. Wipe the upper front of the phone gently with a clean, soft cloth. Because the sensor position varies, clean the general top/front area rather than trying to target a universal sensor location. Do not press, scrape, or insert anything into the phone.

Restart and check the screen-wake setting
Restart the phone
After ending the call, restart the Galaxy and repeat the earpiece-call check. Samsung’s US instructions describe restarting from Quick settings; the exact controls can vary by model and software version. Samsung US call-screen troubleshooting.
Turn off Double tap to turn on screen if the display will not wake
If the screen turns off near your ear but does not come back on when you move the phone away, try disabling Double tap to turn on screen. The documented path is Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. Menu names or locations may differ on your device. Samsung US recommends this check for a screen that does not turn back on during calls.

Install available software updates
Open the phone’s Software update or System update settings and follow the prompts shown on the device. Labels and menus vary across models and software versions. Samsung includes checking for updates among its call-screen troubleshooting steps. Samsung US support instructions.
Run a Samsung Members proximity test if available
Samsung UK documents this path in the Samsung Members app: Get help > View tests > Proximity recognition. Follow the on-screen instructions; the test may ask you to hold your palm close to, but not touching, the top of the display. The menu and test availability can vary by region, device, and app version, so their absence does not by itself prove a fault. Samsung UK’s proximity sensor guidance.

When to contact Samsung support
If the screen still behaves incorrectly during a regular earpiece call after you have removed accessories, cleaned the upper front, restarted, checked the relevant setting, and installed available updates, contact Samsung support for guidance specific to your Galaxy model. The symptom alone does not establish that the sensor has failed. Do not open the phone or buy a replacement sensor based only on call-screen behavior.
If testing without a protector resolves the problem, check compatibility carefully before choosing another: it should be made for your exact Galaxy model and should not cover the sensor area. A replacement accessory is not a fix for a software issue or a damaged sensor.
