It is designed to make certain attacks—such as finding an input for a chosen digest or finding two inputs with the same digest—infeasible in practice. A digest is a compact fingerprint of data, not an encrypted version that can simply be decrypted.
What a cryptographic hash function does
Give the function a message, file, or other bit string and it computes a digest that depends on the input’s contents. For example, SHA-256 always produces a 256-bit digest, regardless of whether the input is a short word or a large file. NIST describes a hash value as a kind of fingerprint of the message or file, while emphasizing that the value depends on its contents (NIST CSRC glossary; NIST Hash Functions).
Because inputs can have many possible lengths but the output has a fixed length, different inputs must sometimes produce the same digest. These are called collisions. The security goal is not to make collisions mathematically impossible; it is to make finding useful ones computationally infeasible for the chosen algorithm and use.
Three different security properties
“One-way” is a useful shorthand, but it does not describe every security requirement. NIST distinguishes three attack goals:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Preimage resistance: Given a target digest, it should be infeasible to find an input that produces it. This is the property most directly associated with the idea that a hash cannot be reversed.
- Second-preimage resistance: Given a particular input, it should be infeasible to find a different input with the same digest.
- Collision resistance: It should be infeasible to find any two distinct inputs that produce the same digest.
These properties are not interchangeable. For example, collision resistance is particularly important when a hash is used in a digital-signature construction. The security strength that matters depends on what the application needs (NIST SP 800-107 Rev. 1).
Can you reverse a hash?
A cryptographic hash is not encryption: it has no decryption key or inverse operation that recovers the original input. Given a digest, an attacker may try candidate inputs and hash them until one matches. Preimage resistance is the goal of making that search infeasible, but it does not guarantee that every real-world input is safe from guessing. If the possible inputs come from a small or predictable set, guesses may be practical.

Nor does a matching digest prove that two files are identical: a collision is possible in principle. A secure hash makes finding one difficult, so digests are useful for detecting accidental or malicious changes, but their assurance depends on the function and the context in which the digest is used.
Digest length and security strength are different
The number of output bits does not by itself state the security strength for every attack. NIST’s Hash Functions page lists SHA-256 as producing a 256-bit digest, with 128-bit collision-resistance strength and 256-bit preimage-resistance strength. The relevant figure depends on the property an application relies on; for digital signatures, NIST identifies collision resistance as the limiting hash property (NIST Hash Functions; NIST SP 800-107 Rev. 1).

Those figures are NIST’s listed strengths, not a guarantee against every attack or a timeless measure of suitability. Algorithm status and application requirements matter alongside output size.
Where hash functions are used—and what a digest does not prove
Hash functions can help detect whether a message or file has changed since a digest was made. They are also components in digital signatures, pseudorandom-bit generation, message-authentication codes, and key-derivation functions, as described in NIST FIPS 202.

A bare digest does not establish who created or sent the data. To authenticate a message, systems use additional mechanisms, such as a keyed message-authentication code or a digital signature. A hash may be part of those mechanisms, but it is not authentication by itself.
Likewise, a general-purpose cryptographic hash is not automatically suitable for storing passwords. Password storage calls for a dedicated password-hashing approach and appropriate parameters; a fast general-purpose hash alone does not provide that protection.

Common hash-function families and NIST standards
NIST specifies approved algorithms for condensed message representation in two standards:
- FIPS 180-4 specifies SHA-1 and SHA-2 variants, including SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, SHA-512/224, and SHA-512/256. Its published final version dates to August 4, 2015. NIST’s landing page notes that it decided in March 2023 to revise the standard after public comment; that page does not establish that the revision has been finalized (NIST FIPS 180-4 landing page).
- FIPS 202 specifies SHA3-224, SHA3-256, SHA3-384, SHA3-512, SHAKE128, and SHAKE256. SHA3-256 and SHA-256 both produce 256-bit digests, but they belong to different standardized families. SHAKE is an extendable-output function: the application selects how many output bits it needs, rather than using one fixed digest length (NIST FIPS 202).
NIST says SHA-1 was deprecated in 2011 and disallowed for digital signatures at the end of 2013. Its Hash Functions page lists SHA-1’s collision-resistance strength as below 80 bits. These are NIST’s stated status and strength figures, not an endorsement of SHA-1 for new applications (NIST Hash Functions).
How to compare hash functions for a task
Choosing a hash is not simply a matter of selecting the longest output. Check the properties and constraints that match the application:
Quick Recap
- Required security property: Identify whether the task depends on collision, preimage, or second-preimage resistance.
- Output format: Determine whether the application needs a fixed-length digest or an extendable output such as SHAKE.
- Standard and status: Confirm that the algorithm is approved or permitted for the intended application and that its status is current.
- Implementation constraints: Account for the system’s supported algorithms and performance requirements without assuming that speed alone makes an algorithm suitable.
