Two different Transmission vulnerabilities have been described as code-execution flaws, and they have different attack paths. CVE-2018-5702 involved the RPC interface and DNS rebinding in versions through 2.92; CVE-2018-10756 involved opening a specially crafted torrent file in versions before 3.00. Updating to a current release is the practical fix, but the distinction matters when assessing an older installation.

Which Transmission code-execution flaw does the headline refer to?

The headline alone does not identify a CVE, and the available advisories document two separate issues. One targets RPC access; the other requires a user to open a malicious torrent file. Neither finding means every Transmission user or every torrent file is affected.

Issue Attack path Affected versions in cited advisories Historical minimum fixed version
CVE-2018-5702 Remote attacker uses DNS rebinding against RPC access control to send arbitrary RPC commands, with potential arbitrary file writes. Through 2.92 in NVD; Gentoo says versions below 2.93. 2.93, per Gentoo’s June 20, 2018 advisory. Gentoo advisory
CVE-2018-10756 Attacker persuades a user to open a specially crafted torrent file; the flaw is a use-after-free involving heap manipulation. Before 3.00, per Gentoo’s July 26, 2020 advisory. 3.00, per Gentoo’s advisory. Gentoo advisory

The version thresholds above are historical remediation boundaries, not recommendations to install those old releases. NVD’s description of CVE-2018-5702 identifies Transmission through 2.92 as affected and explains the RPC-header and DNS-rebinding path: NVD entry for CVE-2018-5702.

How CVE-2018-5702 worked

This issue concerned Transmission’s RPC interface, which allows remote control when enabled. NVD says access control relied on the X-Transmission-Session-Id header. A DNS rebinding attack could bypass that protection and let a remote attacker execute arbitrary RPC commands, potentially writing arbitrary files. Gentoo’s advisory identifies versions below 2.93 as affected and recommends upgrading.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This is distinct from a flaw triggered by parsing a torrent file: the described route here is through RPC access and DNS rebinding, not simply downloading or opening any torrent.

How CVE-2018-10756 worked

CVE-2018-10756 was a use-after-free issue associated with heap manipulation in versions before 3.00, according to Gentoo. Its attack scenario required persuading someone to open a specially crafted torrent file. Gentoo described the possible outcomes as arbitrary code execution with the Transmission process’s privileges or denial of service.

That prerequisite matters: the advisory does not say that routine torrent activity or every torrent file triggers the flaw. It describes a maliciously crafted file that a user is induced to open.

What should Transmission users do now?

  1. Check the installed version. Use Transmission’s About screen or your operating system’s package manager to identify the version in use. If you manage Transmission on a NAS or server, check the package or container image version there.
  2. Install a current release from a trusted source. Prefer the update channel maintained by your operating system or the Transmission project download page. Do not treat 2.93 or 3.00 as suitable current targets; they are only the historical minimum fixed versions cited for these issues.
  3. For an installation that cannot be updated immediately, reduce exposure. Disable remote RPC access if you do not need it, and do not open torrent files from untrusted sources. These are interim risk-reduction measures, not substitutes for upgrading.
  4. Confirm the update actually applied. Check the version reported by the running service, not only the version of a downloaded installer or package. Managed NAS and server builds may receive updates on a different schedule from upstream releases.

The Transmission releases page lists version 4.1.3, dated June 30, 2026, as the latest release when checked. Its notes mention a potential CSRF security issue affecting users who enable remote access; that note does not establish the exact upstream fix version for either historical code-execution CVE. Follow the current version and security guidance provided for your own platform: Transmission releases.

Is the 2026 Transmission security issue the same flaw?

No. Ubuntu’s entry for CVE-2026-38978 describes a clickjacking weakness involving browser-facing WebUI and RPC response paths, not either of the code-execution flaws above. Ubuntu provides fix information for its own packages and releases; those package versions should not be treated as universal upstream Transmission version numbers. See Ubuntu’s CVE-2026-38978 entry.
