The Arm Mali-C55 is a licensable image signal processor (ISP) design for integration into embedded and IoT systems—not a standalone camera, retail chip, or complete system-on-chip. Arm specifies support for images up to 48 megapixels, up to eight independent camera sources, and throughput up to 1.2 gigapixels per second. Those are vendor specifications, not independently measured results, and a finished product’s capabilities depend on its full system design.
What the Mali-C55 is—and what it is not
An ISP processes data from image sensors into usable images or video. The Mali-C55 is hardware IP that a silicon partner can integrate into a system-on-chip (SoC). Arm announced it on June 8, 2022, and identified Renesas as its first publicly named licensee. Arm positions it for embedded and IoT vision applications where image quality, throughput, power consumption, and silicon area are important design considerations. Arm’s product overview describes the product and its intended applications; its 2022 launch announcement provides the launch and licensee context.
Arm lists possible uses including consumer and commercial security cameras, hobby drones, robots, set-top boxes, and augmented-reality wearables. These are target application categories, not confirmation that every category has a shipping product containing the C55. The ISP is one component of a larger design: the chosen sensors, SoC, software, and any downstream accelerators also shape what a complete system can do.
What the specifications mean for camera-system design
Arm’s stated maximums are up to 48-megapixel image resolution, support for as many as eight independent camera sources, and throughput of up to 1.2 gigapixels per second. Arm’s launch material also describes support for resolutions up to 8K. Its support page lists RGGB sensor support and a multi-sensor interface with up to 20-bit linear video input. These are vendor specifications; they do not establish that all maximums can be reached simultaneously in every configuration. Arm Support’s Mali-C55 page lists interface details, while the launch announcement gives the launch-era capability claims.

How the image pipeline handles difficult scenes
Arm describes enhanced high-dynamic-range (HDR) processing, including 2:1 HDR stitching, digital overlay, and dual-pixel HDR. It also lists Iridix local tone mapping, Temper temporal noise reduction, and Sinter spatial noise reduction. Together, these functions are intended to help systems process scenes with challenging lighting or noise, including conditions relevant to outdoor and security-camera use.
Arm’s developer article says the C55 smooths the local tone curve around bright sources compared with the C52 and describes changes to color reproduction and noise reduction. These are vendor descriptions of processing features, not the result of a controlled comparison or an independent image-quality score. Arm’s developer article explains the processing changes.

Arm also said in its 2022 launch announcement that licensees could recognize license-plate details for vehicles traveling at up to 75 mph. Treat that as a promotional use-case example, not a guarantee of recognition accuracy or a benchmark for a finished camera.
On-device machine learning and system trade-offs
Arm describes a design in which Mali-C55 output can be sent directly to a machine-learning accelerator for on-device processing. The intended benefit is to avoid sending as much data to the cloud, potentially reducing associated processing time and cost. Arm’s cited materials do not provide a measured system-level latency, power, bandwidth, or cost improvement, so those outcomes must be evaluated for the actual sensor, SoC, accelerator, software, and workload. Arm’s launch announcement describes the integration approach.

For a product team, the key question is not simply whether an ISP can connect to an ML accelerator. It is whether the complete pipeline—from sensor capture through ISP processing and inference—meets the application’s image-quality, responsiveness, power, and data-handling requirements.
Development software, tuning, and evaluation
Arm describes the Mali-C55 package as including hardware IP, software drivers, 3A libraries, and calibration and tuning tools. The 3A functions are auto-exposure, auto-white balance, and autofocus. Arm says its calibration tool can generate register values and lookup tables and simulate calibration results; specialist tuning training and support are also available.

Arm’s reference evaluation platform is prebuilt and pretuned to let teams evaluate image quality before silicon is available. Arm Support says it includes one fully tuned image sensor supported by FPGA logic and software. That does not mean arbitrary sensors are plug-and-play: using a different sensor may require coordination with Arm or a technical partner. See Arm Support for platform details and Arm’s product page for the software and tools overview.
Teams needing implementation help can also explore the Arm ISP Service Partner ecosystem. Availability and terms should be confirmed with Arm or the relevant partner.

How to compare the C55 with another ISP
The right comparison depends on the camera system, not on a single headline specification. Arm’s ISP-family table lists differences among Mali ISP models, including sensor count, color-filter-array support, and maximum resolution; it does not establish which model is best for a particular application. Arm’s Mali ISP comparison table is a starting point for checking product-family distinctions.
- Count the sensor sources the design needs and verify the supported sensor format.
- Compare maximum image dimensions and throughput against the intended workload.
- Check HDR modes and noise-reduction functions against the lighting conditions the camera must handle.
- Assess configurability and silicon-area constraints in the target SoC.
- Review driver, 3A, calibration, tuning, and evaluation-platform support.
- Confirm compatibility with the selected SoC, sensors, and any ML accelerator.
Arm described the C55 at launch as using almost half the silicon area of previous generations and as having a smaller footprint than its predecessor. This is Arm’s 2022 vendor comparison; the cited material does not specify a process node or configuration for the comparison, and it does not provide an independently measured power result. The launch announcement is the source for that claim.
