A smart suitcase is ordinary luggage with one or more electronic features—not a standard design with a fixed set of components. Depending on the model, it may contain a battery, charging port, tracking or proximity electronics, an electronic lock, a digital baggage tag, a scale, or even a motor. For air travel, the most important detail is often whether a lithium battery is removable and what the airline allows.

What components can be inside a smart suitcase?

The term covers several different functions, and a bag may have only one or two. IATA’s 2017 smart-baggage guidance lists possible features including power banks, GPS tracking with or without GSM, Bluetooth, RFID and Wi-Fi radios, electronic baggage tags, electronic locks, and motorized bags. These are examples of what smart luggage can contain, not a checklist for every suitcase.

  • Charging: A power bank stores energy and supplies it to a phone, tablet, or other device through a charging connection.
  • Tracking and proximity: Radio hardware can support location or proximity features. The exact capability depends on the bag’s design.
  • Locking: An electronic lock responds to an electronic control or key.
  • Weighing: A built-in scale measures the packed suitcase’s weight.
  • Digital baggage tags: Electronic tag hardware can provide a digital alternative to a paper tag.
  • Movement: Some designs add motors so the bag can propel itself or follow its owner. These are distinct from conventional smart bags with a scale, lock, or charging port.

How do the parts work together?

There is no single internal layout. In a charging-focused bag, the central component may be a power bank connected to an external USB port. In a bag with a scale, sensors in or near the handle measure weight. A tracking feature uses radio electronics, while an electronic lock has its own control mechanism. Some functions may rely on a removable battery; others may use smaller replaceable cells.

One manufacturer example shows why it is worth checking the individual model rather than assuming all smart luggage has a large lithium power bank. Heys lists a handle-integrated scale, Bluetooth smart TSA lock, and proximity alarm on its 26-inch SmartLuggage. The product listing says it uses two AAA batteries, not lithium-ion batteries: Heys SmartLuggage product details.

Why does the battery matter when you fly?

A battery intended to charge other devices is treated as a power bank in IATA’s passenger guidance. Battery capacity and whether it can be removed affect how the bag can be carried, checked, or gate-checked. IATA’s May 2017 guidance says lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh do not require operator approval under the stated provisions; batteries over 100 Wh and up to 160 Wh require operator approval. It also says spare lithium batteries and power banks go in cabin baggage, and its smart-baggage reference says an installed battery must be removable so the passenger can take it into the cabin: IATA smart-baggage guidance.

Airline policies can apply their own requirements, so the IATA guidance is not a guarantee that a specific bag will be accepted by every carrier. Check the operating airline’s current rules for each flight.

Delta

Delta says a smart bag’s removable battery must be taken into the cabin if the bag is checked. It also requires battery removal before a cabin bag is surrendered at the gate or on board for loading into the cargo compartment. Delta states a 100 Wh limit unless the operator approves a battery up to 160 Wh: Delta battery-powered baggage policy.

Frontier

Frontier’s FAQ, last modified February 20, 2026, says it does not allow smart bags if the battery cannot be removed, exceeds 100 Wh, or shows signs of damage or defect. For a bag with a removable battery, its instructions say to remove it before boarding, carry it in cabin baggage, and protect the terminals against short circuit: Frontier bag options FAQ.

What to check before choosing or packing one

  1. Identify the features you will use. Decide whether you need charging, tracking or proximity alerts, a lock, a scale, a digital tag, or motorized movement. A bag described as “smart” may offer only a subset.
  2. Read the power specifications. Check the battery type and stated watt-hour (Wh) rating. If a power bank is included, find out whether it can be removed.
  3. Check the operating carrier’s rules. Look up its requirements for cabin carriage, checked baggage, and gate-checking. Do this for every airline operating part of the itinerary.
  4. Plan for a bag handoff. If you may check the bag or surrender it at the gate, be ready to remove the battery and carry it in the cabin when the airline requires that.
  5. Assess the suitcase itself. Consider its size, weight, and ordinary luggage features alongside the electronics. The cited product and policy information does not establish comparative durability or performance between brands.
