It defines how devices share a ring network, manage ring configuration, recover from failures, and provide fair access to the shared medium. It is not just any network arranged in a ring.
What does IEEE 802.17 define?
IEEE describes 802.17 as defining the medium access control (MAC) characteristics, physical-layer interface methods, and layer-management parameters for the RPR access method. Its protocols cover detecting and initializing the shared ring configuration, recovering from failures, and regulating fair access to the shared medium. The specification supports multiple physical layers and rates up to 10 Gb/s; that is a detail of the standard’s scope, not a claim about typical current networks. IEEE’s 802.17-2011 catalog entry identifies the standard and summarizes its scope.
How is a resilient packet ring arranged?
A technical chapter describes RPR as using two counter-directional optical-fiber rings. The ring-based design aims to carry packet traffic while providing resilience associated with carrier transport. The MAC coordinates how traffic uses the shared ring, while the standard’s configuration and recovery protocols address topology changes and failures. Martin Maier’s Cambridge University Press chapter summary describes this architecture.
How does RPR recover when a link fails?
RPR includes protocols for recovery from ring failures. Maier’s 2010 chapter summary reports recovery within 50 ms for a single link or node failure. IEEE separately describes 50 ms protection for the protected inter-ring connection added by amendment 802.17c-2010. These are figures attached to specific descriptions and fault cases, not a universal guarantee for every implementation, network, or failure scenario. Actual recovery performance in a particular network is not established by those summaries. IEEE’s amendment summary also mentions loop prevention and traffic load balancing between rings for that inter-ring connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is RPR the same as Ethernet Ring Protection Switching?
No. Both involve ring topologies and resilience, but they are different standards and mechanisms. RPR is the IEEE 802.17 packet-ring access method. Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) is an ITU-T G.8032 approach for protecting Ethernet traffic in a ring, including Ethernet-layer loop avoidance. The shared ring shape does not make them interchangeable. ENISA’s 2012 report discusses ERPS in the context of resilient Internet infrastructure.
What is the status of the IEEE 802.17 standard?
As of October 4, 2026, IEEE lists 802.17-2011 as “Inactive-Withdrawn,” and the working-group page says its planned work is finished and there are no active projects. That describes standards-body status; it does not establish whether any operator continues to use installed RPR equipment. The available sources also do not establish current vendor support, equipment availability, deployment prevalence, or operator-specific recovery performance. IEEE 802.17 Working Group
