The demonstrated exploit ran with the logged-in user’s privileges. Disclosed on October 9, 2023, the issue is historical; the practical step now is to check your distribution’s security tracker and install its updates for your exact release.
What was CVE-2023-43641?
GitHub Security Lab researcher Kevin Backhouse disclosed CVE-2023-43641 on October 9, 2023. It is a memory-corruption vulnerability in libcue, a library that parses cue sheets: text files describing the layout of tracks on a CD. It is not a vulnerability in the Linux kernel. Backhouse’s technical disclosure describes how the flaw could be reached through GNOME’s file-indexing components.
How the parser flaw worked
The vulnerable code processed an INDEX value in a cue sheet. It converted the value with atoi but did not reject negative indexes before writing into an array. A crafted negative value could therefore cause an out-of-bounds write. The proposed fix adds a lower-bound check alongside the existing upper-bound check.
How could a downloaded file trigger it?
- A user clicked a malicious link on a webpage, causing the browser to save a crafted
.cuefile. - The file landed in
~/Downloads, a location included among the areas Tracker Miners indexes in a user’s home directory. - Tracker Miners scanned the cue sheet and called libcue to parse it, reaching the vulnerable code without the user opening the file.
That automatic scan is why the route was described as “1-click”: the click initiated the download, while the indexing path could process the file. Backhouse demonstrated code execution by launching a calculator. The affected tracker-extract process ran as the current user, not as an administrator; gaining administrator privileges would require a separate privilege-escalation vulnerability.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which systems were demonstrated as vulnerable?
Backhouse tuned the full exploit for Ubuntu 23.04 and Fedora 38. He said GNOME systems on other distributions could also be vulnerable, but he had not created proof-of-concept exploits for those distributions. Distribution-specific offsets needed adjustment, so the demonstrated versions should not be treated as confirmation that every GNOME distribution—or every installation—was exploitable.
Ubuntu reports a CVSS 3 severity score of 8.8 for this issue and separately assigns it Medium priority in Ubuntu’s own prioritization system. Those are different ratings, not competing descriptions of one scale. Ubuntu’s CVE-2023-43641 security page, marked updated August 19, 2025 in the retrieved result, lists fixed package versions for the releases shown there.

How do you check whether your Linux system is patched?
- Identify your distribution and release, then open its security tracker entry for CVE-2023-43641.
- Compare your installed package status with the vendor’s fixed-version guidance for that release. Distribution packages may include backported fixes, so an upstream version number by itself may not establish whether your system is patched.
- Install available security updates through your distribution’s normal update channel, then check the tracker again for your release and package status.
Debian’s security tracker lists libcue as fixed in bullseye, bookworm, trixie, forky, and sid, with release-specific package versions; it identifies libcue v2.3.0 as the upstream fix. These entries are not a substitute for checking the package guidance for the release you use. Fedora’s historical records document fixes for libcue and Tracker Miners sandbox improvements, but those older records are not a complete status page for current Fedora releases. Fedora’s libcue issue record and Tracker Miners issue record provide that historical fix context.

What should readers take away?
- The flaw was in libcue’s cue-sheet parsing, reached through GNOME’s Tracker Miners indexing path—not in the Linux kernel.
- The demonstrated attack began with a click that downloaded a malicious
.cuefile; automatic indexing could then trigger the parser. - The demonstrated code execution had the logged-in user’s privileges, not automatic administrator access.
- The full exploit was demonstrated on Ubuntu 23.04 and Fedora 38; exposure on other GNOME distributions was described as possible, not individually demonstrated.
- Use the fixed-package guidance for your exact distribution and release, and install its security updates.
