Is Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike?
There is no single, universally accepted checklist for the Soulslike label. For Phantom Blade Zero, the most accurate answer is that its developers frame it as fast kung-fu action, while some of its announced combat features invite Soulslike comparisons.
In a 2023 PlayStation Blog article, S-Game contrasted the speed and broad move arsenals of games such as Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden with what it called the more strategic action of Soulslikes and Monster Hunter. The studio said it wanted to deliver a fast action spectacle, with a controller-friendly way to perform elaborate move chains. That is the studio’s design framing, not a definitive genre ruling.
There is a Soulslike-adjacent cue in the boss design: combat director Qianli Ma told PC Gamer that a boss on normal difficulty has fixed combos players can learn through repeated fights. But the available descriptions do not establish several other features often used to compare Soulslikes, such as a death penalty, checkpoint loop, stamina economy, or interconnected world structure. Those similarities should not be assumed.

How does combat work?
S-Game describes combat as built around expressive weapon combinations and rapid kung-fu action. Its August 17, 2026 PlayStation deep dive says exploration unlocks more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. The PlayStation game page describes combos as seamless and easy to learn, while rewarding mastery; that is a feature description, not an independent assessment of how the game feels to play.
The announced combat setup includes weapon upgrades, accessories, and summons. Some defeated enemies also expand the arsenal. Players can reforge an upgraded weapon to recover materials and invest them in another weapon, offering a way to change a combat setup without treating every upgrade as permanent.

What difficulty settings does Phantom Blade Zero have?
The August 2026 PlayStation deep dive names three modes. The US PlayStation Store also lists adjustable preset difficulty, but the published descriptions do not specify every setting or restriction in each mode.

Ma’s PC Gamer interview offers more detail about Hellwalker. He said the changes to core mechanics are relatively small compared with the changes to enemy behavior and abilities: the mode adds boss moves, and human bosses can respond to the player’s situation with adaptive, fighting-game-inspired behavior. His explanation is a developer account, not an independent difficulty test.

That same interview helps explain the mode’s contrast with normal difficulty. Ma said a normal-difficulty boss has fixed combos players can work out over repeated attempts, while Hellwalker introduces more variation. He also described style as part of the challenge: “But if you want to do it in a very beautiful manner, that’s the difficult aspect.” This points to a distinction between surviving a fight and performing it with flair, rather than establishing a measured difficulty ranking.
How do progression and weapon upgrades work?
The confirmed progression details center on exploration, quests, and combat customization. PlayStation’s August 17, 2026 deep dive says the journey includes citizens and side quests; some quests may open new story paths. Exploration can reveal secrets and unlock weapons, while defeating certain enemies adds to the available arsenal.

Weapons can be upgraded and paired with accessories. Reforging an upgraded weapon returns materials for reinvestment elsewhere, making it possible to redirect resources as the player experiments with different setups. The available descriptions do not establish a complete skill-tree system or explain every progression gate.
The PlayStation Store describes protagonist Soul as a warrior with 66 days left to live. That premise gives the story its time pressure, but the published feature descriptions do not establish how the 66 days affect the playable progression system.

When and where can you play Phantom Blade Zero?
As of the current PlayStation listings, the game is announced for PS5. The US PlayStation Store lists October 29, 2026; S-Game’s August 17, 2026 deep dive gives October 29 as the launch date and notes October 28 in the US and select regions. Check the store for the date shown in your region, since regional listings can differ.
