“Robot see, robot do” is an informal way to describe visual imitation learning: a robot observes a demonstration, extracts information about the task, and uses it to learn or plan a behavior it can perform. It does not necessarily copy a person’s movements directly, and the phrase is not the name of one standardized algorithm.
What does “robot see, robot do” mean?
The phrase means that a robot can learn from watching an example. In practice, it is shorthand for a family of approaches often called visual imitation learning, rather than a single defined technique. The Computer Language Company AI glossary summarizes the idea as “Robots can learn by watching” and links it to visual imitation learning.
A system must turn what it observes into information useful for action. Depending on the task, that could mean identifying objects and their movement, inferring a sequence of actions, or planning motions that achieve an observed result. The robot’s sensors, body, and available data affect how that translation works.
Does a robot copy a person’s movements exactly?
Not necessarily. A person and a robot have different bodies, joints, reach, and ways of grasping. A robot may instead reproduce the important outcome of a demonstration—for example, how an object moves—using motions suited to its own capabilities.

How one 2024 study applied the idea
The 2024 paper Robot See Robot Do: Imitating Articulated Object Manipulation with Monocular 4D Reconstruction addresses manipulation of articulated objects, whose parts move relative to one another. Its method uses one monocular RGB video of a human demonstration along with a static multi-view scan of the object. It is therefore not presented as a system that learns from any arbitrary video by itself.
From a demonstration to robot motion
- Capture the example and object: provide the single-view RGB demonstration and the static multi-view object scan.
- Recover object-part motion: the method uses 4D Differentiable Part Models to reconstruct 3D motion of the object’s parts from the monocular video.
- Plan for the robot: it plans bimanual robot-arm motions to reproduce the demonstrated object-part trajectories, accounting for the robot’s morphology rather than directly tracing the human hand path.
The authors report an average success rate of 87% for each phase and 60% end-to-end success across 90 trials. The trials involved nine objects, ten trials per object, and a bimanual YuMi robot. These figures describe that study’s setup; the lower end-to-end rate also shows that phase-level results should not be mistaken for whole-pipeline success. They are not a general benchmark for imitation learning on other tasks or robots. See the Hugging Face Papers listing for the paper description and reported results.

A separate “Robot See Robot Do” project at IAAC
The same wording also appears in an IAAC project case study, but it describes a different kind of work. The project concerns collaborative, in-place assembly of complex building structures using a custom object-aware mobile augmented-reality interface—not the 2024 paper’s articulated-object imitation method.
In the described assembly, people and robots work in a shared digital-physical space: robots hold one modular element while people fix another. The operator helps guide the robot’s joints approximately before the robot reaches the exact point. The IAAC blog case study describes the interface and collaboration; it does not provide outcome metrics comparable to the paper’s robot trials. The blog quotes designer Madeline Gannon: “Maybe we are still in the phase where there is a continuous hardware exploration therefore it is difficult to develop general UX UI.”
