To make an element follow a path in CSS, set offset-path to define the route, then animate offset-distance to move the element along it. Use offset-rotate to control whether it turns with the route and offset-anchor to choose which point on the element sits on the path.
What does offset-path do?
offset-path defines a geometric route for positioning a transformable element. The W3C CSS Motion Path Module Level 1 specification describes it as a property that “Specifies the offset path, a geometrical path the box gets positioned on.” The property supplies the geometry; by itself, it does not make the element move over time.
The path and related properties work together as an offset transform:
offset-pathdefines the route.offset-distancesets the position along that route.offset-rotatecontrols the element’s rotation relative to the route.offset-anchorselects the point on the element aligned with its position on the route.
The property’s initial value is none, meaning there is no offset transform. It applies to transformable elements and is not inherited.

How do I make an element follow a path in CSS?
Give the element an offset-path, then use an animation or transition to change offset-distance. The following illustrative code uses a custom SVG path string and moves the element from the start to the end of the path:
.mover {
offset-path: path("M 0 0 C 80 -60, 160 60, 240 0");
offset-distance: 0%;
offset-rotate: auto;
animation: travel 3s linear infinite alternate;
}
@keyframes travel {
to {
offset-distance: 100%;
}
}
At 0%, the element is at the start of the path; at 100%, it is at the end. The animation repeats in alternating directions. With offset-rotate: auto, the element rotates to follow the path direction. Remove that declaration or choose another rotation value if it should keep a different orientation.

In this example, the browser resolves the path relative to the element’s coordinate context. The element’s anchor point affects how it sits on the route; adjust offset-anchor if its default alignment is not suitable.
What path values can I use?
The offset-path grammar supports ray(), a URL reference, basic shapes, and a coordinate-box value. Use none when no offset path should be applied. The available forms let you choose between convenient built-in geometry and a custom route:

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Basic shapes: Forms such as
circle(),ellipse(),polygon(), andpath()can describe geometry directly in CSS. path(): Accepts an SVG path string for custom geometry. MDN notes that the custom path must be a single string, cannot be assembled from CSS variables, and uses implicit pixel units for path lengths.- URL reference: Points to geometry supplied by an SVG shape.
ray(): Defines a route using a direction and ray-related parameters.
For a simple loop, a basic shape may be more readable than a long custom path. For a route that needs specific curves, path() offers more control. Check support for the exact syntax you choose.
How do I use an SVG path?
For a custom route written directly in CSS, use path() with an SVG path-data string, as in the animation example. The path is one string rather than a series of CSS-variable fragments, and its lengths use implicit pixel units. See MDN’s path() CSS function reference for the function’s details.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
You can also use a URL value when the geometry is provided by an SVG shape. This is a different authoring form from embedding path data in path(); choose the one that fits how your SVG and CSS are organized. The exact URL syntax and compatibility should be checked against the target browsers and the chosen geometry.
Is CSS offset-path supported in my browser?
MDN marks offset-path Baseline Widely available since March 2022, while noting that support varies for some parts. That broad status does not guarantee identical support for every path form or newer syntax. Check the current compatibility information for the value you plan to use and the browsers your audience needs.
