Orderly code can still be vulnerable when data crosses into a component that trusts it without checking the properties it needs. Prevent that failure by validating data at every trust boundary—external and internal—against the receiving operation’s actual requirements. Validation helps, but it does not replace safe parsing, parameterized queries, output encoding, authorization, or protections against concurrency bugs.
What a boundary check is—and why it matters
A trust boundary is a transition where data moves from one context into another that makes assumptions about it. Common examples include a browser sending a request to a server, one service calling another, a parser handing a structure to an application, and an application passing data to a database or rendering it as output.
MITRE’s official definition of CWE-20: Improper Input Validation describes a product that receives data but “does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly.” The issue is not whether the code looks clean; it is whether each receiving component’s assumptions are enforced before the data is used.
This does not mean every well-organized codebase is exploitable. It means a missing or incorrect check can let data reach a component in a form, size, or combination it cannot safely handle.

What should input validation check?
Validation should encode the application’s real requirements, not a generic notion of “safe” characters. OWASP recommends checking both syntax (whether a value has an acceptable form) and semantics (whether it makes sense for the operation). Define rules for individual fields and for the relationships among them.
- Type and format: Is this a number, identifier, date, or other expected representation?
- Length and range: Are strings, collections, and numeric values within documented bounds? A string that resembles an integer can still be too large, and a parsed integer can still exceed the permitted range.
- Presence and structure: Which fields are required? Are unexpected fields rejected or safely ignored? What do missing and null values mean? Are nested objects and collections bounded?
- Cross-field consistency: Do related values make sense together—for example, is an end date after a start date?
- Business rules: Is the requested operation valid in the current state? A positive quantity may still exceed available stock.
Use field-specific allowlists and constraints, then reject data that fails them. Removing suspicious characters or trying to anticipate every malicious string is not a substitute: deleting characters can silently change a value while leaving it invalid for the operation.

Why client-side validation is not enough
Browser checks improve usability, but a server cannot assume that a request passed through the intended page. A client can be modified or bypassed, and requests can be constructed without using the browser interface. The server must validate the data it receives before relying on it. OWASP’s Input Validation Cheat Sheet recommends server-side validation, with client-side checks used as a complementary convenience.
The same principle applies beyond public requests. Internal APIs, partner feeds, message queues, and stored records can contain unexpected or malformed values. Validate at a receiving boundary whenever the component depends on particular properties; “internal” does not mean “guaranteed to meet this component’s contract.”

How to validate safely at each boundary
- Set resource limits before parsing. Cap request size and parser depth before buffering or parsing input. A schema check performed after parsing cannot protect a parser that has already consumed excessive memory or CPU.
- Decode and parse according to the protocol. Use maintained parsers, handle parse failures, and avoid treating malformed input as a usable partial result.
- Validate the parsed representation. Check structure, types, lengths, ranges, required and extra fields, nested collections, and business-rule relationships against the receiving operation’s contract.
- Keep normalization consistent. Validate the representation the application will actually use. Avoid decoding the same data again downstream in a way that changes its meaning after the check.
- Reject invalid input before side effects. Do not proceed with only some checks passed, or quietly transform a failed value into a different one unless that behavior is an explicit, safe part of the contract.
For regular expressions, require a match against the whole value rather than a matching substring, limit input length, and avoid patterns vulnerable to excessive backtracking. Test valid values, clearly invalid values, and near-matches. For rich HTML, use a maintained HTML sanitizer: ordinary input validation and regex checks are not replacements for sanitization. Treat upload filenames and content-type metadata as untrusted, and apply dedicated controls for file content, size, storage, and serving.
What validation does not replace
Validation answers whether a value meets the constraints of the operation. Other controls address different questions and must remain in place.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- SQL safety: Use parameterized queries rather than relying on validation to make query strings safe.
- Browser output safety: Apply context-aware output encoding when inserting data into HTML, JavaScript, URLs, or other output contexts.
- Access control: A valid identifier does not prove the caller may view or modify the object it identifies. Check authorization separately.
- Concurrent state changes: A business-rule check can pass for two simultaneous operations against the same old state. For example, two withdrawals may each pass a balance check before either updates the balance. Use appropriate transactions, locking, or other concurrency guarantees as well as validation.
How to review code for missing boundary checks
Trace data from its source through decoding, parsing, normalization, and transformations to every place it is used: databases, filesystems, rendered output, logs, and external services. At each boundary, ask what the receiving component assumes and whether those assumptions are checked before use. OWASP’s validation guidance and Code Review Guide provide complementary reference points.
- Are public and internal inputs covered, including service calls, queues, imports, and stored data?
- Do the rules cover syntax, semantics, size limits, required and unexpected fields, and combinations of values?
- Are request size and parser depth limited before parsing, and are parse errors handled safely?
- Does validation apply to the representation actually used, with no later decode that changes its meaning?
- Are database parameterization, context-aware output encoding, authorization, and concurrency controls handled independently?
- Do tests include malformed, oversized, nested, out-of-range, and near-matching values, as well as valid cases?
A useful review follows each input all the way to its sinks instead of stopping at the first validation function. The important question is whether every consumer receives data that meets its own requirements—and whether the separate security controls for that use are also present.
