Depending on the meeting app and what is happening, it may show that person in a large tile, beside shared content, or on a room display. It is a way of arranging the video—not a separate meeting mode that looks identical everywhere.
How active speaker view works
The meeting app detects or identifies the current speaker and gives that person more screen space or prominence. The exact result depends on the app, your view, and whether someone is sharing content. A speaker may appear in a large video panel, a smaller tile beside a shared screen, or a room display. Pinning or spotlighting a participant, room-display settings, and recording configuration can also affect what appears.
Active speaker view vs. gallery view

Some apps highlight the active speaker within gallery view, so seeing a highlighted tile does not necessarily mean the meeting has switched to a single-speaker layout.
How it appears in Microsoft Teams and Zoom
Microsoft Teams
In Teams, the minimized meeting window includes a control labeled Show only active speaker. Microsoft says, “This will only show who’s actively speaking.” That is a Teams-specific label and behavior, not a universal name for the layout. Microsoft Support: Multitask during a Microsoft Teams meeting.

Zoom desktop while sharing
In Zoom’s Mac and Windows desktop apps, the video panel shown while sharing a screen has an Active Speaker View option, separate from gallery layouts and controls to hide or minimize the panel. Zoom’s documentation describes large and smaller active-speaker panel options on Mac; its Windows grid panel has a stated participant minimum. These are screen-sharing panel options, not a universal layout rule for every Zoom meeting. Zoom Support: Sharing your screen while seeing all meeting participants.
Zoom Rooms
On a Zoom Rooms display, Speaker View gives the current speaker a large view. With a single display during screen sharing, the shared screen can take the large view while the speaker appears in a smaller thumbnail. Available arrangements depend on the display configuration and number of screens. Zoom’s Flexible active speaker view returns to gallery view or the background after a remote participant stops speaking for 15 seconds; that timing applies to this documented Zoom Rooms feature, not active speaker layouts generally. Does your meeting view control the recording?
Not necessarily. Zoom distinguishes Speaker View recordings, which capture the active speaker and switch as participants speak, from Gallery View recordings, which show multiple participants. A computer recording can follow the recorder’s selected view, while a cloud recording can capture multiple configured layouts independently of an individual participant’s screen. When screen sharing, whether participant video appears in the cloud recording depends on the host’s settings. No. Active speaker view is an ordinary software layout that prioritizes a speaker’s tile or panel. Speaker tracking is a separate room-camera capability that can identify and frame people in a physical meeting room. For example, Microsoft Multi-Stream IntelliFrame uses supported multi-stream camera hardware; Microsoft lists Teams Rooms Pro as required for IntelliFrame and people recognition.
