Yes—James Brown’s later LEGO-inspired brick computer runs Doom on its own electronics, rather than merely displaying a game sent from an external computer. The custom RP2040 build combines a tiny monochrome OLED with touch-sensitive studs and motion input. It is a maker project, not an official LEGO product or retail kit.
How the brick computer evolved
Brown’s project progressed from a tiny animated display into a self-contained computer. In the early concept, he replaced the painted display on a LEGO-style slope brick with a programmable screen. He then used the brick as a miniature external monitor that could show Doom running on a separate computer.
By the later iteration, the game ran locally on an RP2040-based custom circuit board inside the brick. Raspberry Pi’s April 2023 feature documents an earlier construction stage; Hackster’s later report describes the version with onboard power and controls.
How Doom runs on the brick itself
The later build uses an RP2040 microcontroller and a 0.42-inch OLED. Brown adapted Graham Sanderson’s playable Doom port for the low-resolution, single-color display. The screen is monochrome, not color: rapid screen updates, using the RP2040’s second core, create the appearance of grayscale.

In Raspberry Pi’s 2023 account, the electronics are arranged as a frame made from four joined PCB panels. The front panel carries the RP2040 and a 4MB flash chip. Brown explained the construction: “By soldering together a complete frame of PCBs, I get a very precisely machined brick shape, contacts for the battery, and a USB port tucked away inside.” Those details describe the earlier frame; the reports do not establish that every storage detail remained identical in the later build.
Can you play without an external controller?
Yes. Hackster reports that an extra brick snaps onto the bottom, making room for the electronics, OLED, a small battery pack, and an accelerometer. The two studs on top act as capacitive touch buttons, while the accelerometer adds motion input. The reported controls worked imperfectly: Brown said, “The capacitive touch wasn’t tuned very well, so it’s a bit shooty.”

What you need to know before trying to build one
- It is custom hardware. The reports describe a maker-built PCB frame and do not provide a complete, verified bill of materials or a step-by-step replication guide.
- A Pico is not a drop-in substitute. A Raspberry Pi Pico is a related RP2040 development board that could suit microcontroller experimentation, but Brown’s compact brick uses a custom circuit board.
- Do not confuse nearby Pico Doom figures with this build. Raspberry Pi’s separate Pico Doom article says 2MB of flash can hold its executable and a compressed original shareware WAD. That is information about the Pico port, not a confirmed storage specification for Brown’s brick.
- The project is not an official LEGO product. The LEGO-style shell is part of Brown’s own build, and the sources do not identify it as a commercial kit.
