There is no single percentage for every EV. In a DOE report summarizing Argonne tests of a 2012 Nissan Leaf, range fell 18% in 95°F conditions with the cabin A/C set to 72°F, compared with a 72°F ambient reference test. Under continuous A/C Max cooling, the reported reduction was as much as 42% against that same reference. Those are results from specific tests—not a forecast for every EV or hot-weather drive.

What the test figures mean

The figures come from Argonne National Laboratory testing summarized in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2013 Vehicle and Systems Simulation and Testing R&D Annual Progress Report. The tested vehicle was a 2012 Nissan Leaf, and the comparison was between hot-weather conditions at 95°F and a 72°F ambient reference condition.

Reported result What it describes
18% lower range 2012 Nissan Leaf test at 95°F, with A/C targeting a 72°F cabin, compared with the 72°F ambient reference condition.
Up to 42% lower range The same reported hot-weather comparison with continuous A/C Max cooling.
0.4–2.8 kW A/C power Reported A/C-system power at 95°F, varying with the cabin temperature target.
9% energy savings A separate plug-in hybrid vehicle test in the report: targeting 78°F rather than 72°F in the same hot-weather conditions.

The PHEV’s 9% energy-savings result is not a range result for the Leaf, and it does not establish a universally best cabin setting. The report’s power figures also cannot be turned into a general miles-per-hour range penalty without knowing the particular EV’s energy use and trip.

Why the drain varies

A/C uses electricity that could otherwise be available for driving, but its demand changes with the conditions and how long the system runs. The DOE/Argonne report identifies cabin target and hot ambient conditions as relevant; its hot-weather tests included simulated solar loading. A 2014 peer-reviewed modeling study identifies ambient temperature, solar radiation, humidity, trip length, and thermal soak—the heat retained after a vehicle has been parked—as important drivers of cabin-conditioning energy and range sensitivity (Kambly and Bradley, Journal of Power Sources).

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Outdoor heat and sun: A hotter cabin and direct solar load can increase the work needed to cool the interior.
  • Cabin target and cooling mode: A lower target or maximum-cooling mode can demand more than a less aggressive setting.
  • Vehicle and HVAC design: The Leaf test does not establish the same result for other models.
  • Trip length: Conditioning demand over a short trip can affect the trip’s energy use differently from the same demand spread across a longer drive.

How to read an EV’s EPA range label

The EPA’s Fuel Economy and EV Range Testing page says its hot test runs at 95°F with HVAC set to cool. It also explains that the common method applies a 0.7 adjustment factor to laboratory range to account for real-world influences including A/C, cold temperatures, and high-speed or aggressive driving, then combines adjusted city and highway range using 55% city and 45% highway weighting.

That 0.7 factor is a broad adjustment, not a separate A/C-only deduction applied to every vehicle’s label. The EPA page says the city, highway, and high-speed tests run without HVAC, while the hot and cold tests include climate control. So a label is not an exact promise of the range you will get on a hot day with A/C running.

Ways to manage A/C energy use

  • Choose the cabin temperature you actually find comfortable. The DOE/Argonne PHEV test found lower energy use at a 78°F target than at 72°F, but it does not establish an ideal setting for every person or EV.
  • Expect greater sensitivity on a hot, sunny day or after the car has heated up while parked; both solar loading and thermal soak are identified as relevant factors in the cited sources.
  • A windshield sunshade may help limit solar heating while parked, but the cited test did not measure sunshade use or quantify any resulting range savings.
  • For a useful estimate for your own drive, consider the EV model, trip duration or route, outside temperature, sun exposure, and chosen cabin target. The available figures do not support a precise personalized prediction on their own.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The most concrete hot-weather percentages here come from a 2013 DOE report summarizing tests of one older EV model, not a current fleet-wide study. EPA range guidance describes label methodology rather than isolating a universal A/C-only penalty. The EPA’s MOVES5 emissions-adjustment documentation treats A/C as a potentially sizeable influence on vehicle energy consumption and models adjustments by operating mode, but it does not supply one consumer-facing percentage for EV range.
