OpenCode is a credible open-source alternative to Claude Code if you want a coding agent that can work across multiple model providers, including local models. It supports terminal, IDE, and desktop workflows, and its documented Plan mode lets you review an approach before asking it to edit files. It is not automatically free: model access and inference may involve separate accounts or costs. The title’s unnamed tool cannot be confirmed from the available context, so this article treats OpenCode as the likely candidate—not a verified identification.

What OpenCode is—and why it may fit

OpenCode describes itself as “The open source AI coding agent.” The project presents it as a way to work with code from a terminal, IDE, or desktop application, with features including language-server integration (LSP), multiple sessions, session sharing, provider integrations, and support for local models. Its documentation describes asking questions about a codebase, planning a feature, and then applying changes.

That makes OpenCode especially relevant if Claude Code’s workflow appeals to you but you want more choice about which model powers the agent. The project’s homepage says it supports more than 75 large-language-model providers through Models.dev, including local models. That provider breadth is a project claim, not a guarantee that every model or integration will suit every project.

The title does not identify its tool by name, and available context does not independently establish that it refers to OpenCode. OpenCode is a well-supported candidate: a current alternatives guide identifies it as an open-source Claude Code alternative, and OpenCode’s own pages describe an open-source coding agent. Nothing here establishes that OpenCode is universally better than Claude Code.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What you need to pay for

OpenCode’s software being open source does not mean that model use is free. The documentation says to configure an API key for the provider you choose and recommends OpenCode Zen as a curated option for newcomers. Model inference, subscriptions, and any optional gateway are separate from the agent software; check the current terms and billing for the provider you select.

The official homepage also presents GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT Plus/Pro accounts as login options. These are vendor-listed authentication choices; confirm their current availability and account terms before relying on them.

A practical way to start with OpenCode

Installation options listed by the project include an install script, npm, Bun, Homebrew, Scoop, Chocolatey, Pacman, and Nix. The desktop app is labelled beta in the repository README. Because installation commands and release status can change, use the project’s official documentation for current setup instructions rather than relying on a copied command.

  1. Choose a provider and configure access. Follow the documentation to connect the model provider or local model you intend to use. Check that provider’s current account and billing terms.
  2. Open your project and start OpenCode. The docs describe launching the agent in the project you want it to work with.
  3. Run /init. OpenCode analyzes the project and creates an AGENTS.md file in the project root. The documentation recommends committing this file to Git so the agent can draw on the repository’s structure and conventions.
  4. For a feature, review a plan before edits. Switch to Plan mode and describe the change. OpenCode’s documentation says this mode disables changes and suggests an implementation plan. Review and refine that plan, then switch to Build mode when you want the agent to make changes. The docs also say simpler tasks can go straight to implementation.
  5. Inspect the resulting work. Treat the plan as a review aid, not a guarantee that instructions will always be followed or that generated code is safe. Examine proposed changes and use your project’s normal tests and review process.

How to decide whether it is the right alternative

What to compare What to check
Model control Whether your preferred hosted provider or local model is supported, and whether you are comfortable configuring its account or API access. OpenCode describes support for more than 75 providers, including local models; availability may vary by integration.
Workflow surface Whether terminal, IDE, or desktop use fits how you work. Other coding agents may be terminal-first, editor-oriented, or broader platforms; these are categories, not a permanent ranking.
Human control Whether planning, permission controls, reviewable changes, logs, tests, and ways to inspect or undo work meet your needs. OpenCode documents Plan mode; evaluate the safeguards available in your actual setup.
License and integrations The OpenCode repository identifies the project as MIT-licensed. Check the terms of any separate model provider or vendor service; the project license does not determine theirs.
Total cost Separate the agent software from inference, subscriptions, and optional provider services. Confirm current provider billing before committing to a workflow.

Other alternatives include terminal-first tools such as Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, and Qwen Code, alongside editor-oriented or broader-platform options such as Cline, Kilo Code, Goose, and OpenHands. Which is a better fit depends on your preferred interface, model access, and control requirements—not a ranking established by the available comparisons.

What the popularity figures do—and do not—show

OpenCode’s homepage displayed 208,000 GitHub stars, 950 contributors, and more than 13,000 commits when accessed on October 4, 2026. It also claimed 16 million developers each month; that is the project’s own adoption claim, not an independent count. A comparison guide reported 210,568 stars and said its project facts were checked weekly, with the OpenCode README read date listed as September 17, 2026. Those figures were captured at different times and should not be treated as a simultaneous measurement. Popularity can indicate community activity, but it does not show that one coding agent performs better than another.
