To learn JavaScript from the basics through intermediate level, start with values and variables, then add control flow, functions, arrays and objects. Next, build browser projects, learn promises and async/await, and organize code with modules. Keep JavaScript’s core language separate from the APIs provided by browsers or Node.js: the language concepts transfer, but the available features depend on where your code runs.
What JavaScript is—and where it runs
JavaScript is a programming language used in web browsers and other environments, including Node.js. The language itself provides syntax and features such as values, functions, objects, and promises. A runtime supplies additional capabilities: browsers provide the DOM and web APIs, while Node.js provides APIs for server-side and command-line programs. Code that uses a browser API will not necessarily work unchanged in Node.js.
MDN Web Docs puts its purpose simply: “The JavaScript Guide shows you how to use JavaScript and gives an overview of the language.” Its JavaScript Guide was last modified November 7, 2025. MDN also separates beginner learning modules, intermediate material, and reference documentation in its JavaScript overview, last modified May 22, 2026.

1. Values, types, declarations, and scope
Begin with expressions, literals, comments, and the difference between primitive values and objects. Learn to declare variables with const and let: use const when you will not reassign the binding, and let when you will. A const object can still have its properties changed; the binding, not the object’s contents, is fixed.
Understand scope—the part of a program where a name is available—and how declarations behave in different blocks and functions. You will encounter var in older code, so learn to recognize it, but use let and const for new code unless a particular project requires otherwise. Practice by declaring values, checking their types, and changing a small set of inputs without creating accidental global variables.
2. Conditions, errors, and loops
Use if/else for branching and learn switch when several cases depend on one value. Loops repeat work: try for when the iteration pattern is explicit, while when repetition depends on a condition, and for...of to visit values in an iterable such as an array.
Errors are another part of control flow. Use throw to signal an invalid condition and try/catch to handle failures where recovery is possible. Exercises: validate a user-entered number, count matching items in a list, and reject input that does not meet a stated rule.

3. Functions and reusable logic
Functions package behavior so it can be called with different inputs. Learn function declarations and expressions, arrow functions, parameters, return values, and the distinction between returning a value and merely producing a side effect. Give functions one clear job, and test them with ordinary, boundary, and invalid inputs.
Once functions feel familiar, explore closures: a function can retain access to variables from the scope where it was created. This is useful for keeping state private or creating specialized functions, but it is easier to understand after scope and ordinary function calls.
4. Arrays and objects
Arrays hold ordered values; objects group properties under keys. Practice reading and changing both, then learn common array transformations such as map for producing a new array, filter for selecting values, and find for locating a match. Destructuring can make it clearer to pull selected values from arrays or objects.
Use an object to represent a record—such as a task with a title and completion status—and an array to hold several records. After these basics, learn Map and Set when their keyed-lookup or uniqueness behavior fits the problem. MDN’s guide covers these topics alongside functions, objects, and closures.

Turn the fundamentals into browser projects
A browser project combines JavaScript with HTML and browser-provided APIs. The DOM—the browser’s representation of a page—lets a script find elements, respond to events, and update content. These are browser capabilities, not universal parts of the JavaScript language.
Project 1: An input validator
Make a small form that checks whether a value is present and meets a simple rule. Read the input when the user submits, use conditions to validate it, and display either a useful error or a confirmation. This exercises values, functions, conditions, and event-driven browser interaction.
Project 2: A task list
Represent tasks as objects in an array. Add a task from a form, render the list, and let a user mark an item complete or remove it. This gives practice with collections, functions, events, and keeping displayed content in step with program data.
Project 3: A small search or filter
Start with a fixed array of records and let a user filter it by a text query or category. Use array methods to derive the matching results, then update the page. Keep the filtering function separate from the DOM update so you can reason about the language logic independently of the browser interface.

Promises, async functions, and error handling
Asynchronous work matters when a program waits for an operation such as a network request. A Promise represents an operation that may complete later, either successfully or with a failure. Learn how to handle both outcomes before relying on syntax that makes asynchronous code look more sequential.
Use async and await without losing errors
An async function always returns a Promise. Inside it, await pauses that function’s progress until the awaited Promise settles; it does not block the entire JavaScript runtime. Use ordinary try/catch around awaited work when you need to handle a rejection, and make the recovery visible to the user or caller rather than silently swallowing the failure.
For example, a browser project might request data, wait for the result, and render it. Separate the steps—request, response handling, and display—so a network or parsing error can be reported clearly.
Use Promise.all for independent work
Promise.all is useful when several independent Promises can run at the same time and the program needs all their results. It rejects if one of the input Promises rejects, so handle that failure deliberately. Do not use it merely to make code appear faster when later work depends on earlier results.

Use modules to organize a growing project
Modules let you split code into files and explicitly share selected functions or values with export and import. They make it easier to keep a project organized once a single script becomes difficult to navigate. Introduce them after functions and objects are comfortable; otherwise, file structure can distract from learning what the code does.
In a browser
Modern browsers support ECMAScript module syntax. A page loads a module script with <script type="module" src="./main.js"></script>. Modules have different loading and scope behavior from a classic script, and browser imports need valid module paths.
In Node.js
Node.js supports ECMAScript modules as well as CommonJS. How Node interprets a file depends on its extension or package configuration; its documentation describes markers such as .mjs and a package type field. See the Node.js ECMAScript modules documentation for the applicable version and rules. Do not assume that browser and Node.js module resolution or APIs are identical.
What counts as intermediate JavaScript?
There is no single boundary, but a learner is moving beyond the basics when they can combine core language features into a project, manage errors and asynchronous results, and divide code into understandable modules. Intermediate study is then best chosen to solve problems you actually encounter rather than treated as a checklist that must be completed before building.
Recommended Free Tools
- Prototypes and classes: understand how JavaScript objects share behavior and how class syntax provides one way to express object-oriented patterns.
- Equality and coercion: learn how comparisons behave when values have different types, and prefer clear, intentional conversions.
- Iterators and generators: explore custom ways to produce sequences when ordinary arrays are not a natural fit.
- Regular expressions: use patterns for text matching or validation, while keeping complex expressions readable and tested.
- Dates and internationalization: learn the tools appropriate to date handling and locale-sensitive formatting rather than assuming one display format fits every user.
- Resource management: study the language’s relevant features when a project’s resource-lifetime needs call for them.
MDN presents these areas in its guide and further-study material; they are not prerequisites for writing a first useful program.
Choose a learning resource that matches your next step
Start with MDN’s free learning path if you want to move from beginner modules into intermediate topics and then consult the detailed guide as a reference. When comparing another course or book, check its intended level, whether it teaches JavaScript itself or assumes HTML, a framework, or a runtime, how much hands-on practice it includes, and whether it explains asynchronous code and modules with current examples.
Exploring JavaScript (ES2025 Edition) is an edition-specific book resource, but marketplace listing, format, and current availability can change. A book is optional: MDN provides a free path for learning the language.
