Use a short explanation or worked example to get oriented, then switch quickly to trying the next step, checking the result, and practicing on new examples. A tutorial can help you start; it cannot do the practice for you.
Why watching a tutorial is not the same as learning
Following a video can make a process feel familiar while leaving you unsure whether you can perform it without the next instruction. A more useful test is to pause before the answer appears and try to predict, explain, or perform the next step yourself. That attempt shows what you can retrieve and execute—not just what looks recognizable on screen.
This is not an argument against tutorials. For a genuinely unfamiliar task, an explanation or worked example can establish the basic terms and sequence. The change is what you do next: alternate between seeing an example and making an attempt, rather than watching passively from start to finish.
A practical method for learning a skill
- Define one small, observable outcome. Decide what a successful attempt looks like: for example, making one simple dish, building one small feature, playing a short passage cleanly, or completing one repair step. These are examples of useful goals, not results from a study.
- Get the minimum explanation you need. Find a reliable reference or worked example if you lack the vocabulary, do not know the first move, or need to understand safety constraints. “No tutorial required” is not a reason to guess at a risky or unfamiliar procedure.
- Predict or retrieve the next step. Before revealing what comes next, say it aloud, write it from memory, or try the action. If you are following an example, pause at the point where the next solution step would be shown.
- Check the attempt and correct it. Compare your result with an authoritative example, a suitable test, or feedback from a qualified person. Work out why the attempt differed, then retry. An unsupported guess is not the goal; learning depends on having a way to check and correct it.
- Move from examples to fresh problems. Once you have an initial foothold, try a new task instead of studying only more demonstrations. A 2024 Learning and Instruction article reported better long-term performance from problem-solving after initial acquisition than from continued example study, including on complex tasks. The comparison included a five-minute test and a one-week delayed test; it supports a progression, not skipping all initial explanation. Read the 2024 study.
- Vary the examples or setting. Change the details, input, or context so you have to recognize the underlying principle rather than repeat a memorized sequence. A 2018 study record reports that retrieval practice with variability led to better transfer to new examples across four experiments. That finding supports trying varied examples, but it is not a quantified promise for every skill. See the 2018 study record.
- Return to the skill later. Try the task again after a gap to see what you can still retrieve and do. One study measured performance after a one-week delay; that was its test point, not a universal schedule to copy.
What the studies say about attempts between examples
A 2025 study by van den Broek, van Wermeskerken, and van Gog involved 164 adults studying six worked examples. In one condition, participants described and executed upcoming solution steps before those steps were revealed, then had an opportunity to see the next step and restudy it. On a test one week later, that retrieval-prompt group performed significantly better on recall and problem-solving than the group that studied examples without prompts. The study supports inserting attempts into example study; it does not show that instruction is always unnecessary or that practice without feedback is equally effective. Read the 2025 study.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Participants in the retrieval-prompt condition spent an average of 31 minutes studying, compared with 13 minutes in the control condition. Those are averages in this particular experiment, not a recommended study duration; the prompted group spent longer with the material.
Make practice deliberate, not just repetitive
Repeating an action can help, but only if you are attending to what happens and using that information to improve. The American Psychological Association describes deliberate practice this way: “Deliberate practice involves attention, rehearsal and repetition and leads to new knowledge or skills that can later be developed into more complex knowledge and skills.” Read the APA resource.

In practical terms, give each attempt a purpose: test a particular step, notice what went wrong, and use the result to adjust the next try. A review in the Annual Review of Psychology surveys retrieval-based learning, also known as the testing effect, and discusses its theory and future directions. Read the review.

For a low-risk task, a small attempt followed by a useful check may be a sensible way to learn. For work involving injury risk, regulated procedures, specialized equipment, or serious consequences if done incorrectly, start with qualified instruction and reliable safety guidance. The evidence described here comes from particular educational tasks; it does not establish one best method for every physical, creative, technical, or professional skill.
