These five free survival games on Steam cover very different kinds of survival: zombie scavenging and building, a short-run roguelike, a large online post-apocalyptic world, and two multiplayer horror games. Steam lists each as free or free to play; optional paid content and hardware needs vary, so the best pick depends on whether you want crafting, co-op scenarios, or survival horror.

At a glance: which free survival game fits you?

Game Survival style Play options Notable caveat
Unturned Zombie sandbox with scavenging, hunting, shelter and fortification Co-op or PvP; community maps and mods Steam lists in-game purchases, which the developer describes as cosmetic
Muck Compact survival roguelike: gather, craft, build and withstand enemies Single-player and online co-op Minimum listed storage is 100 MB
Once Human Online post-apocalyptic survival with resource gathering and territory building Online multiplayer 100 GB storage listed; in-game and chance-based purchases disclosed
No More Room in Hell Co-op survival horror with scarce supplies, infection and extraction Up to eight players Mature-content warning for zombie violence and gore; paid soundtrack DLC available
SCP: Secret Laboratory Faction-based multiplayer survival horror in a containment breach Multiplayer faction objectives Not presented as a crafting or base-building game

1. Unturned: a zombie sandbox to scavenge and build in

Unturned is the closest fit here if “survival game” means searching a dangerous world for supplies, finding food and making a place to hold out. Steam’s description frames the loop around scavenging, hunting and building shelter in a zombie-overrun setting. You can explore, fortify a home, and play co-op or PvP.

Its community content is a notable draw: the Steam listing highlights custom maps and mods through Steam Workshop. The store page lists Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux requirements. It also discloses in-game purchases; the developer characterizes those items as cosmetic on the store page, which is a store-page claim rather than an independent assessment.

2. Muck: a small-scale survival roguelike

Muck is built around gathering resources, finding items and building a base to survive as long as possible. Steam labels it a survival roguelike. The listing describes crafting tools, weapons and armor, with enemies arriving after nightfall, making this a more compact, run-focused choice than a sprawling persistent world.

ARK: Survival Evolved - Nintendo Switch
  • Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dyno herd
  • Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
  • Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
  • Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
  • Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout

It supports both single-player and online co-op. The listed minimum requirements are Windows 7, a dual-core 2.00 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, Intel HD 520 graphics and 100 MB of storage. The listing also notes that Steam Client support for Windows 7 ended on January 1, 2024, and that Windows 10 or later is required for the client.

3. Once Human: a large online post-apocalyptic survival world

Once Human suits players who want a broader online world rather than a small roguelike run. Steam describes it as a “Strange Worlds Survival Game,” with cooperation, hostile creatures, competition for resources and territory building. Survival systems include food and water affected by pollution; pollution can reduce sanity and maximum HP. Players also craft weapons and build a territory.

ARK: Survival Evolved (PS4)
  • Use cunning strategy and tactics to tame, train, ride and breed the 100+ dinosaurs and other primeval creatures roaming the dynamic, persistent ecosystems across land, sea, air, and even underground Build your character's strengths and gain items, skills, and pet creatures using in-depth role-playing systems
  • Start a tribe with hundreds of other players to survive and dominate competing tribes...and ultimately discover ARK's true purpose
  • Build a fire or shelter, then craft customizable clothing & armors to help protect against damage and extreme temperatures on your way to unlocking advanced technologies and equipment
  • Chop down trees and mine metal and other precious resources to build massive multi-leveled structures composed of complex snap-linked parts

Check the practical and purchase details before installing: the Steam listing specifies 100 GB of storage, highly recommends an SSD, and requires broadband internet. It discloses in-game purchases and chance-based purchases, and requires acceptance of a third-party EULA.

4. No More Room in Hell: co-op survival horror

No More Room in Hell is a survival-horror game, not a conventional crafting sandbox. Its Steam description calls it a cooperative realistic first-person survival horror modification for the Source Engine. Up to eight players face scarce ammunition, infection, shelter defense and extraction, so survival is about coordinating under pressure and getting through the scenario.

Rank #3
ARK: Survival Ascended - PlayStation 5
  • ARK: Survival Ascended has completely recreated and redesigned the artwork and worlds of ARK to take advantage of the latest in videogame technology, Unreal Engine 5, using high-end graphics features such as fully dynamic Global Illumination (“Lumen”), so that light bounces realistically of off surfaces and provides realistic reflections, and advanced mesh streaming (“Nanite”) of hundreds of millions of triangles for extreme detail.
  • Advanced new physics systems such as dynamic water so that every creature creates waves, ripples, splashes, and bubbles as they move through fluids, and fully interactive physical foliage where every blade of grass, bush, and tree reacts to characters, explosions, projectiles, and physics objects.
  • ARK: Survival Ascended includes access to all of ARK’s worlds, including Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, ARK Genesis Part 1, ARK Genesis Part 2, and more. The Island is released now, with the subsequent expansion worlds to be added at no additional cost on a regular basis.
  • Thorough Quality of Life revamps in every area: redesigned User Interfaces, dynamic navigation for intelligent creature pathfinding, Wild Babies, Photo Mode, new Camera systems, new Map system, Tracking System, new Structures and Items, new Creatures, and much more.
  • Cross-Platform Modding: Download & play new custom content created by players, including new maps, creatures, items, and game modes, through a dedicated new Mod-bowser directly within the game! Enjoy an endless stream of new ARK content as the creativity and talent of the community is fully unleashed for the first time ever across gaming platforms!

The store listing says, “No pay to win items or microtransactions” and “100% Free (unless you buy the soundtrack DLC <3)”. It also carries a mature-content warning for zombie violence and gore.

5. SCP: Secret Laboratory: faction-based facility survival

SCP: Secret Laboratory turns survival into multiplayer faction play during a containment breach in an underground facility. Depending on your role, you can help re-secure the facility, assist the Insurgency, or play as an SCP trying to escape. Steam tags it as both “Survival Horror” and “Survival.”

How to choose among these five

  • For scavenging and building: Start with Unturned or Once Human. Unturned emphasizes a zombie sandbox and community maps; Once Human adds a large online world and pollution-linked survival systems.
  • For a compact crafting loop: Choose Muck for resource gathering, nighttime enemies and a base-building roguelike structure.
  • For horror scenarios and teamwork: No More Room in Hell emphasizes cooperative survival against zombies, while SCP: Secret Laboratory centers on faction objectives in a containment breach.
  • For lower listed storage: Muck’s minimum is 100 MB, while Once Human lists 100 GB. These are Steam listing figures, not independent install-size tests.

All five games were listed as free or free to play on Steam when checked on October 4, 2026; store availability and purchase disclosures can change. Review Steam’s live listings before downloading.
