The result comes from a specific indium-covered silicon surface—not a general-purpose superconducting material or a consumer device—and combines direct vortex imaging with directional resistance measurements.
What are the atomic-scale “rails”?
The material was Si(111)-(√7×√3)-In, an atomic-layer superconductor formed on a vicinal silicon surface. A vicinal surface is slightly misoriented from an ideal crystal face, producing parallel atomic-height steps. In this experiment, those steps acted as preferred paths for Josephson vortices: the team’s scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images showed vortices associated with the steps.
A vortex is a localized region of magnetic flux in a superconductor. Here, “rails” describes the steps’ effect on vortex motion; it does not mean that researchers added separate tracks or built a device. The material and surface geometry are central to the finding.
How did researchers measure vortex guidance?
STM imaging
STM provided direct images of Josephson vortices at the atomic steps. The images establish the relationship between vortices and the step structure; transport measurements separately tested how readily vortices moved in different directions.

Directional resistance
Four-terminal resistance measurements compared transport parallel and perpendicular to the steps. The Physical Review B paper reports sheet-resistance anisotropy proportional to vortex mobility of order 103 at intermediate magnetic fields. NIMS/MANA summarizes the result as vortex motion being more than 1,000 times easier along the steps than across them. These are descriptions of the measured anisotropy in this material and geometry, not a universal multiplier for superconductors.
At what field and temperature does the effect occur?
The paper identifies an approximate 0.10–0.20 T magnetic-field range with one-dimensional, pinning-free vortex flow along the steps. This is a reported operating window for the studied system, not a general specification for superconducting materials.

The behavior also depends on temperature and magnetic field. NIMS/MANA says the guidance can be tuned by changing either, and that at the lowest temperatures vortex motion is governed by quantum tunneling. The reported effect therefore does not imply that vortices always move freely along steps under all conditions.
How does this result fit with earlier step-vortex research?
Atomic steps were already known to influence vortex behavior, but earlier work used different materials, length scales, and measurement techniques.

- 2014 surface-superconductor study: The University of Tokyo’s Institute for Solid State Physics reported STM evidence of Josephson coupling at atomic steps and vortices localized there in the same surface-superconductor family. Its imaging was performed below 0.5 K, and the report gives a transition temperature near 3 K. That work supplies context for vortices at steps; it is not the 2026 directional-transport result.
- 2002 MoGe-film study: Scanning SQUID microscopy of weak-pinning amorphous MoGe films with lithographically patterned steps found enhanced vortex density on the thin side and a vortex-free region on the thick side. Those fabricated steps and films differ from the intrinsic atomic steps and atomic-layer material in the 2026 study.
What could this mean for superconducting technology?
Guiding vortices along selected paths could be relevant to future superconducting technologies, and the NIMS/MANA research team describes that possibility. The evidence reported here, however, establishes a laboratory transport effect in a particular material and geometry. It does not demonstrate a finished device, establish performance against competing vortex-control methods, or identify a product available to buy.
Moving from this observation to an application would require showing that the effect can be used reliably in a device and under its intended operating conditions. The cited reports do not establish those engineering outcomes or provide a like-for-like comparison with alternative methods.
