To send Shopify orders into a cloud database with Python, subscribe to the order events you need, expose a public HTTPS endpoint, verify each webhook with Shopify’s signature, and upsert the order into your database. Use Shopify’s GraphQL Admin API separately to import existing orders and reconcile missed or changed data; webhooks alone are not a complete recovery plan.
How the integration works
A webhook is an HTTP POST Shopify sends to a destination when a subscribed event occurs. Your Python service receives the request, verifies that Shopify sent it, and stores the relevant order fields. Shopify describes webhooks as a way to keep an app in sync with Shopify data or trigger an action after an event (Shopify’s webhook overview).
The basic flow is:
- Choose the order data and events you need.
- Configure a webhook subscription and destination.
- Receive the request at a publicly reachable HTTPS endpoint.
- Verify the signature against the raw request body.
- Deduplicate the delivery and safely upsert the order.
- Use the Admin API to backfill and reconcile orders.
Shopify’s official Python package demonstrates webhook verification and leaves a place for application-specific database logic (Shopify Python app template).
Choose the order events and access you need
Decide which fields your database needs before requesting access or writing a schema. For example, an order identifier and update timestamp may support basic reporting, while customer or line-item details require additional handling. Request only the permissions needed for the data and operations in your app.

Select webhook topics that match the lifecycle you intend to capture. An order-created notification can record new orders, but it does not by itself guarantee that later changes are reflected. Shopify supports configuring subscriptions in app configuration or through the GraphQL Admin API; consult the current documentation for the topic names, configuration method, and access requirements for your app (webhook setup, orders query and permissions).
Set up a Python endpoint
Your handler needs a public HTTPS URL that Shopify can reach. For local development, use a secure tunnel or a development app setup that exposes the local service; for a live integration, deploy the endpoint to a host that provides HTTPS. The exact deployment steps depend on the host and web framework.

Read the request body as raw bytes before decoding or parsing its JSON. Shopify calculates the webhook signature from that body, so verifying a re-serialized JSON object instead can produce a mismatch. The request should not be trusted or used to update the database until verification succeeds.
Verify the signature and handle duplicate deliveries
Shopify sends an HMAC signature in the X-Shopify-Hmac-Sha256 header. Compute the expected HMAC using the raw request body and your app’s shared secret, encode it as required by Shopify, and compare it with the supplied value using a constant-time comparison. Reject requests with a missing or invalid signature. Shopify’s documentation covers signature verification and webhook headers (HTTPS webhook subscriptions).

Use the X-Shopify-Webhook-Id delivery ID to recognize a delivery you have already processed. Store it with a uniqueness constraint or another durable deduplication mechanism. Also make the order write repeatable: use Shopify’s order identifier as a stable key and perform an upsert rather than blindly inserting a new row on every delivery. Shopify recommends validating webhook signatures and handling duplicate deliveries (webhook delivery guidance).
Keep the request handler quick. Persist the verified event or place it on a queue before acknowledging it, then perform slower database or API work asynchronously where appropriate. This limits the chance that a transient database delay prevents timely acknowledgement. Delivery and retry policies can depend on the webhook product and subscription path; check the current documentation for the one you use rather than assuming a single retry schedule.

Map orders into a database schema
Shopify does not prescribe a cloud database schema. For a straightforward relational design, create an orders table with a unique Shopify order ID, fields your application actually uses, and an update timestamp. Store complex nested data such as line items in related tables or a JSON column if your reporting needs justify that choice.
For each verified event, transform only the relevant payload fields and upsert the order by its Shopify ID. If separate tables are updated, use a transaction where supported so a partial write does not leave inconsistent order data. Keep a durable record of delivery IDs if you need to suppress repeated processing beyond the lifetime of a request.

Choose a cloud database that fits the workload
A cloud database is a hosted service, not a particular kind of physical device. Choose based on how your Python service will connect, what queries and reports you need, the operational work you can take on, and availability and cost in your region. The reviewed official material does not establish a universally best provider or current comparative prices.
One documented AWS architecture uses AWS AppSync to execute SQL against Aurora PostgreSQL through the Data API. The AWS guide describes enabling the Data API, setting up an Aurora cluster, and configuring database credentials in Secrets Manager (AWS AppSync relational database data source guide). This is an example architecture, not a requirement for a Python webhook integration. The guide’s sample references US-EAST-1 and Aurora PostgreSQL 16.6; verify current engine versions, supported regions, configuration steps, and costs before adopting it.
Backfill and reconcile with the Admin API
Webhooks are useful for new activity, but an initial import or recovery needs an API query. Shopify’s GraphQL Admin API orders query can retrieve orders updated after a timestamp. Query only the fields you need, use the required access scopes, and paginate results when the result set exceeds a single page (Shopify GraphQL Admin API orders query).
Save a sync checkpoint such as the most recent successfully reconciled update time. On a scheduled run, query from that point, paginate through the results, and upsert each order. Choose an overlap or other checkpoint strategy that tolerates records updated near a run boundary, and ensure repeated imports remain safe. The specific checkpoint logic is an implementation choice; Shopify’s query documentation establishes the updated-after query and pagination approach, not a prescribed synchronization algorithm.
A webhook request does not itself provide an exchangeable ID token for subsequent Admin API calls. If your handler or a background worker needs to query the Admin API, it must use an appropriately stored offline access token associated with the shop (Shopify Python app template). Receiving and verifying a webhook and making an authenticated API request are separate operations.

- Keep the Shopify app secret, access tokens, and database credentials out of source control; use environment-specific secret storage.

- Verify signatures from the untouched raw request body before parsing or writing.
- Record the webhook delivery ID and make order writes idempotent.
- Acknowledge after durable receipt, and move longer work to a queue or background worker.
- Run a paginated GraphQL import and scheduled reconciliation using a saved update checkpoint.
- Store secrets outside code and restrict access to customer data.
