Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that gives AI applications a standard way to communicate with external tools and data. The AI application acts as the host, creates clients to connect to MCP servers, and decides how to use what those servers provide. MCP standardizes the exchange; it does not ensure a server is safe, a result is correct, or every client supports every server.
What is Model Context Protocol?
MCP defines a common language for an AI client and an external service to exchange context and requests. Without a shared protocol, each AI application and service would need its own integration method. With MCP, a server can expose capabilities through a defined interface, and a host can connect to servers that its implementation supports.
Think of MCP as a connector standard in software: it makes communication more consistent, but it does not make every connection automatic. A server determines what service or data it offers; a host determines which servers it can connect to and how it uses their responses. MCP also does not prescribe how an AI application uses its language model or manages the context it receives. See the MCP architecture overview.
How does MCP work?
Host, client, and server
- Host: The AI application coordinating the interaction.
- Client: A component the host creates to communicate with one MCP server. A host creates a separate client for each server.
- Server: The service that exposes capabilities, such as tools, resources, or prompts.
A typical local server uses STDIO for communication; a remote server commonly uses Streamable HTTP. These are common choices, not a guarantee that every client supports both.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Two protocol layers
The data layer defines JSON-RPC-based messages, including requests, discovery, capabilities, and notifications. The transport layer defines how messages travel, including connection setup, framing, and transport-specific authorization. Separating these layers lets the protocol describe what is exchanged without treating every connection method as identical.
A tool call, step by step
- The client asks which tools are available using
tools/list. - The model selects a tool that could help with the task.
- The client sends a
tools/callrequest containing the tool name and arguments shaped to the tool’s input schema. - The server carries out the operation and returns content.
- The model can use the returned content to continue the interaction.
MCP structures this exchange; the server’s implementation determines what the operation actually does. The host may also decide whether a user sees the call or must confirm it.

What are MCP tools, resources, and prompts?
These are different kinds of server capability, not interchangeable names for the same thing.
| Capability | What it provides | Example use |
|---|---|---|
| Tools | Callable functions that let a model request an action. A tool has a name and metadata, including an input schema. | Query a database, call an API, or perform a computation. |
| Resources | Data or content a client can read and provide as context. | Read a file, database record, or API response. |
| Prompts | Reusable templates that structure model interactions. | Provide a recurring set of instructions or examples. |
In short, tools request actions, resources provide data, and prompts provide reusable interaction templates. “Model-controlled” describes tools in the protocol; it does not mean every host presents tool access the same way. The host’s interface and implementation determine what users can see and control. See the MCP tools specification and OpenAI’s MCP server guidance.

What changed in the July 2026 MCP specification?
The official maintainers announced specification revision 2026-07-28 on July 28, 2026. If you are implementing or troubleshooting MCP, check which revision your host, server, and SDK support; examples written for earlier revisions may use behavior this release retires.
- The revision retires the
initialize/initializedexchange and theMcp-Session-Idheader. Requests instead carry protocol version, client identity, and capabilities in_meta. - A client may call
server/discoverto learn server capabilities, but discovery is optional. - The release describes multi-round-trip requests for cases such as missing input or confirmation, cache hints in list/read responses, header-based routing, and a formal extensions framework.
- It describes a formal shift from Dynamic Client Registration toward Client ID Metadata Documents, as well as authorization hardening.
The maintainers said TypeScript, Python, Go, and C# SDKs spoke the new revision at release; Rust support was in beta. SDK support changes over time, so verify the specific client and library versions you plan to use. The release also reports close to half a billion monthly downloads across Tier 1 SDKs and more than one billion total downloads each for the TypeScript and Python SDKs. These are maintainer-reported figures, not independently audited statistics. Read the maintainers’ July 28, 2026 release announcement.

What does MCP mean for security?
MCP is a communication protocol, not a blanket security guarantee. A server may have access to private data or be able to perform consequential actions. Before connecting one, understand what it can access, which actions it can take, what credentials it uses, and what confirmation controls the host provides.
The tools specification says servers MUST validate tool inputs, implement proper access controls, rate-limit calls, and sanitize outputs. It also says there SHOULD be a human in the loop who can deny tool invocations. Applications SHOULD make exposed tools clear, visibly indicate invocations, and ask for confirmation for operations; clients SHOULD show inputs for sensitive operations and validate results before passing them to a model. These are specification requirements and recommendations—not proof that a particular implementation follows them. The specification states: “For trust & safety and security, there SHOULD always be a human in the loop with the ability to deny tool invocations.”

For production MCP servers, OpenAI’s developer documentation recommends stable HTTPS endpoints using Streamable HTTP, and authorization when tools access private data or perform actions for a user. The right setup still depends on the service and threat model.
How to evaluate an MCP server or integration
Before connecting a server—or choosing between integrations—check:
Quick Recap
- Capabilities: Which tools, resources, and prompts does it offer? Are those capabilities necessary for your task?
- Access and permissions: What data can it read, and what actions can it perform?
- Transport and deployment: Is it local over STDIO or remote over Streamable HTTP, and does your host support that option?
- Authentication and authorization: Which credentials are used, and how are access rights limited?
- User controls: Can users see available tools and active calls, confirm sensitive operations, or deny a request?
- Compatibility: Which MCP revision and SDK versions do both the client and server support?
