To turn Background App Refresh on or off, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh, tap Background App Refresh, then choose Off, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data. The choice controls whether suspended apps can check for updates and new content in the background, and whether they can use cellular data to do so.
How to change Background App Refresh
- Open Settings and tap General.
- Tap Background App Refresh.
- Tap Background App Refresh on the next screen, then select Off, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.
Apple documents these options in its instructions for switching apps on iPhone. The setting controls background refresh; it does not prevent you from opening an app and checking for new content yourself.

Background App Refresh applies to apps that have been suspended after you switch away from them. Apple describes it as a way for suspended apps to “check for updates and new content.” It is separate from an app being visible in the App Switcher: Apple says suspended apps are not actively in use, open, or taking up system resources. Some background tasks and services can still use resources, so the App Switcher alone is not a reason to force-quit every app.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose Off if you want to prevent this background refresh route. Apps may not have refreshed content ready when you return, so you may need to open them and wait for updates.
- Choose Wi-Fi if you want background refresh when connected to Wi-Fi but do not want this feature to use cellular data.
- Choose Wi-Fi & Cellular Data if you want background refresh to be allowed on either connection.
These choices govern Background App Refresh, not every kind of network activity an app may perform when you use it.

Why the setting may be off or seem not to work
Low Power Mode is enabled
Low Power Mode turns off Background App Refresh. On iPhone 14 and earlier, check Settings > Battery. On iPhone 15 and later, check Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. Apple notes that on supported devices with Adaptive Power enabled, Low Power Mode may also turn on automatically at a low battery level; that behavior does not apply to every iPhone. Low Data Mode is enabled
Low Data Mode also turns off Background App Refresh. If you are trying to allow refresh, check the relevant cellular plan and Wi-Fi network settings. Apple’s Low Data Mode instructions explain how to find those controls.

Does turning it off save battery?
It may reduce background activity, but Apple does not publish a specific battery-life saving for switching off Background App Refresh. Battery life varies with how you use the iPhone and the apps on it, so a percentage cannot be promised. To investigate a particular drain, check app-level activity in Settings > Battery; Apple’s battery-drain guidance explains how to review usage and activity.
