The EICO Model 425 was a postwar, tube-based oscilloscope sold as a kit for observing and analyzing electrical waveforms. Period sources place the 425-K kit in both 1950 advertising and a 1956 catalog, but surviving examples differ, and the date or condition of one instrument cannot be inferred from another. A photographed specimen discussed by Caleb Kraft in 2014 is a useful case study in what an autopsy can—and cannot—tell you.

What the EICO 425 was designed to do

The EICO 425 was a general-purpose oscilloscope intended for radio and television work. Opweb summarizes its purpose as analyzing current and voltage waveforms, with extended frequency, sweep, and sensitivity range for its intended market. That description establishes the instrument’s broad role, not its complete performance specifications. Opweb’s Model 425 archive lists two English service/user manual scans; consult the appropriate scan for circuit details and numerical specifications.

Do not treat unverified figures circulating in later discussion as a specification sheet. In comments on Kraft’s article, readers mention bandwidth and maximum-frequency figures, as well as AC coupling, uncalibrated response, weak triggering, nonlinear timebases, and the absence of triggered sweep. Those are commenter observations, not confirmed manufacturer specifications. The available model summary does not establish a complete, reliable set of values for bandwidth, sensitivity, sweep range, calibration accuracy, or trigger performance.

What the period record establishes

The historical record supports the kit context, but it does not pin every surviving unit to a single build date or configuration.

Evidence What it establishes What it does not establish
Oscilloscope Museum entry The museum catalogs its EICO Model 425, serial number 7466, as vintage 1949 and identifies it as a wideband oscilloscope kit. That date is for the museum’s specimen; it is not a decoded manufacture date for other 425s.
October 1950 Radio-Electronic Engineering advertisement An indexed period advertisement lists the 425-K kit for $39.95. The advertised nominal price is not a current value, an inflation-adjusted price, or the price of an assembled instrument.
1956 Allied Radio catalog An indexed catalog lists the 425-K as a 5-inch oscilloscope kit. Catalog presence does not establish the full production period or that every unit had the same tube, case, or accessories.

The museum describes its serial-number-7466 example as working and notes that some capacitors appear to have been replaced. That is a report about that individual scope, not evidence that other examples work or share its repair history.

What the photographed specimen reveals—and what it does not

In his February 12, 2014 EE Times article, Caleb Kraft describes a particular EICO 425 made in Brooklyn. He found no date on its case and estimated, by comparison with other examples, that it belonged to the second half of the 1950s. That is an author’s estimate, not a confirmed date derived from a serial-number system. Kraft identifies the specimen’s CRT as a Dumont 5BP2A made in Passaic, New Jersey; another 425 should be checked individually rather than assumed to contain the same tube.

Kraft records physical wear and modification on that scope: its leather handle had deteriorated and snapped, and its power plug appeared to have been replaced. His account also raises a useful question about the graticule—the grid used to judge waveform position. He initially regarded the specimen’s transparency/acrylic grid as an addition, but a reader who said he had built a 425 kit in the late 1950s disputed that, recalling a round graticule disk in the kit. Kraft later acknowledged that the rough cut of this specimen’s disk had informed his inference. Without confirmation from the manual or documentation for the relevant variant, neither observation proves a universal original configuration.

These distinctions matter when examining old electronics: a visible feature is an observation; its date, originality, and purpose are further claims that need evidence. The museum’s 1949 catalog date belongs to its specimen, while Kraft’s later estimate belongs to his. Neither dates every Model 425.

Why restoring one requires caution

A vintage tube oscilloscope is not safe to power casually. Readers commenting on Kraft’s article warn about aged paper and electrolytic capacitors, deteriorated resistors, high operating voltages, and grounding concerns. These are community warnings rather than an EICO service bulletin, but they point to real reasons to treat an unrestored instrument as potentially hazardous. A replacement plug or a proposed three-prong conversion does not, by itself, establish that the chassis is safely grounded or that the instrument is suitable to connect to other equipment.

Do not use an informal comment-thread checklist as a service procedure or apply power to an unknown chassis on that basis. Restoration calls for the correct documentation, inspection of the actual instrument, and competence with vintage high-voltage equipment. If that expertise is not yours, have a qualified technician experienced with tube instruments assess it.

Finding documentation for a specific 425

The Oscilloscope Museum entry links to an EICO 425 manual with schematic and parts list, a construction manual, and another manual file. Opweb’s archive lists two English service/user manual scans, one 18 pages and one 15 pages. Scan legibility and editions may differ, so match the document to the instrument’s variant and verify component values against the actual chassis before sourcing parts. A manual is essential reference material, not a substitute for qualified high-voltage service.
