Perceptual audio coding is a form of lossy compression that uses a model of human hearing to decide which parts of an audio signal need less precise representation. By reducing or removing details expected to be inaudible, an encoder aims to lower the bitrate while preserving the sound’s perceived quality. That aim is not a guarantee that every encoded file will sound identical to its source to every listener.
How perceptual audio coding works
A typical perceptual encoder divides or transforms audio into components, estimates which coding errors a listener is likely to hear, then assigns precision within the available bitrate. MPEG describes AAC as using a continuously signal-adaptive auditory model to estimate a threshold for quantization noise. In practical terms, that estimate helps the encoder decide where it can spend fewer bits without making the resulting error perceptible under its model.
One tool is auditory masking: a strong sound can make a nearby sound or coding noise harder to hear. MPEG’s overview of MPEG-1 Audio describes a perceptual model that produces masking thresholds, or allowed noise levels, for coder partitions. The encoder uses those estimates when quantizing signal values and allocating bits. MPEG-1 Audio
Compression also involves steps that are not perceptual removal. MPEG’s AAC overview distinguishes three sources of coding gain:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Redundancy removal takes advantage of predictable structure in the signal.
- Perceptual irrelevancy reduction may irretrievably discard detail judged unlikely to be heard.
- Entropy coding represents the remaining quantized symbols efficiently.
Entropy coding makes the coded data more compact; it is not itself the process of deciding that a sound can be removed. MPEG’s AAC technical overview
Why perceptual coding is lossy
When an encoder discards detail through perceptual irrelevancy reduction, the original information cannot be recovered by decoding. The result may nevertheless sound transparent—that is, a listener may not notice a difference in particular listening conditions. Transparency is an intended outcome, not proof that no information was lost or a universal promise for every listener, file, and playback setup.

Perceived quality depends on factors including the codec, bitrate, encoder, audio content, playback conditions, and listener. A setting that works well for one signal or listening context may not produce the same result for another. AAC’s design description explains its perceptual approach, not a guarantee of identical sound in every use. MPEG’s AAC technical overview
Perceptual coding is broader than MP3 or AAC
MP3 and AAC are familiar codec examples in the MPEG audio family. Perceptual audio coding describes the broader approach; AAC is a particular standardized codec with its own tools, not another name for the general principle. MPEG-4 Audio, for example, comprises tools for applications ranging from low-bitrate delivery to high-quality audio, speech, music, and other audio content. MPEG Audio Coding · MPEG-4: Audio

USAC combines perceptual and speech coding
Unified Speech and Audio Coding (USAC) illustrates how a codec can combine techniques. The ISO abstract for ISO/IEC 23003-3:2020 describes perceptually shaped quantization noise and other perceptual tools alongside a source-coding technique based on a model of human speech. The record identifies Edition 2, published in June 2020, and notes one amendment; consult the current ISO record for the latest edition or amendment status. A fair comparison needs a defined goal and controlled conditions. You can compare perceived quality at a matched bitrate, or compare the bitrate needed to reach a matched perceived quality. Also account for decoder and device support, intended use, and whether the material is speech, music, or a mixture. Standards descriptions explain codec tools and intended applications; they do not establish that one codec always sounds better than another. The cited materials do not provide controlled listening results for current encoder versions.
